Chavarria Tosses Two-Hit Shutout; ULM Defeats App State, 2-0

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Freshman right-hander Adrianna Chavarria recorded her first career shutout, tossing a two-hitter as No. 8-seed ULM defeated No. 5-seed Appalachian State, 2-0, Wednesday (May 8) afternoon in an opening-round game of the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship. Chavarria outdueled App State right-hander Kenzie Longanecker, who earned All-Sun Belt First-Team honors.

After sitting through a weather delay that lasted nearly 3 1/2 hours, Chavarria battled through some early adversity. She pitched around two walks in the bottom of the first – her only free passes in the game – and a leadoff single in the bottom of the second. Chavarria retired the next 13 App State batters in a row before surrendering a one-out infield single to third by Keri White in the bottom of the sixth. She ended the sixth inning by inducing a 4-3 double play off the bat of Caylie Kifer.

Chavarria sent the Mountaineers down in order in the bottom of the seventh to improve her record to 7-14 on the season. The Pearland, Texas, native matched her career-high with four strikeouts while posting her seventh complete game.

ULM (12-40) scratched out a run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Brie Wrobel singled to right field off Longanecker. Jessie Watts followed with a single to right center that sent pinch runner Victoria Pederson to third. Jaclyn Kresta picked up an RBI on her squeeze bunt, scoring Pederson from third, as the Warhawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead.

The Warhawks put together another one-out rally in the top of the fifth. Sydney McKay drove an 0-2 pitch down the right-field line for a double. Two batters later, Jayden Mount extended ULM's lead to 2-0 with an RBI double into left-center field, scoring McKay from second.

ULM outhit App State, 6-2.

Longanecker (14-8), who went 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts, took the loss.

App State (31-23) swept the three-game regular-season series (3-0, 4-2 and 5-0) from ULM in mid-March.

With the win, ULM advances to play tournament host and No. 4-seed Texas State (28-23, 16-10 Sun Belt) Wednesday at approximately 9:35 p.m.
