Mount’s 3-Run Homer in 10th Lifts ULM Past No. 2-Seed Troy, 3-0

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Freshman right-hander Adrianna Chavarria recorded a career-high eight strikeouts en route to her second-straight shutout in the Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship and Jayden Mount delivered a three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning as No. 8-seed ULM upset No. 2-seed Troy, 3-0, on Thursday, May 9.

For the second time in as many starts, Chavarria was matched against an All-Sun Belt First-Team pitcher, in Troy's Leanna Johnson.

ULM (13-41) put on at least one base runner in each of the first six innings, but the Warhawks went 0-for-8 at the plate with runners in scoring position. Johnson retired 12 Warhawk batters in a row until Megan Shaw came through with a one-out single to right-center field in the top of the 10th, and with two outs, Korie Kreps drew a walk during an eight-pitch at-bat. Mount, who had two hits in her first 10 at-bats in the conference tournament, hit a 3-2 pitch over the left-field wall to give ULM a 3-0 lead.

"Jayden has worked her butt off for so long, so she's prepared for moments like this," first-year ULM head coach Molly Fichtner said. "She was focused to stay behind the ball, and she got a ball she could crush. Jayden didn't go up there looking to hit the ball out of the park; she simply wanted put the ball in play. When you take that approach, good things happen. Jayden's a competitor, and she delivered in the clutch."

Chavarria, who improved her record to 8-14 on the season, scattered six hits – all singles – over 10 innings with three walks. The Pearland, Texas, native was at her best in pressure situations, as the Trojans went 1-for-11 with runners on base, including 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. A total of four Troy batters reached second base.

"(Adrianna Chavarria) Rocky has tunnel vision right now," Fichtner said. "Even if she's behind in the count, she's locked in right now. Rocky has never competed harder than she is right now. She wants the ball and that's exciting."

Troy (37-20) had perhaps its best scoring chance in the bottom of the sixth. With one away, the Trojans got back-to-back singles from Katie Webb and Bailey Taylor, but the scoring threat ended as Stephanie Snyder flied out to right field and Kreps threw out Webb, who tried to advance to third on the play.

Chavarria, who pitched around a single and walk in the bottom of the eighth, retired Troy's last five hitters in a row.

The Warhawks outhit Troy, 7-6, and each team left eight runners on base.

Four of ULM's seven hits came from the first three hitters in the lineup, including Mount who finished 2-for-5 from the plate. The Warhawks' other extra-base hit came off the bat of Brie Wrobel, who doubled with one out in the top of the sixth.

Madeline Porter (2-for-5) and Taylor (2-for-4) paced the Troy offensive attack, recording two hits each.

Johnson (25-9), who went 9.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts, took the loss for the Trojans.

It marks the first time since 2015 that ULM has produced two wins in the conference's postseason tournament.

ULM will face the winner of Game 8 (scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m.) between No. 4-seed Texas State and No. 3-seed UT Arlington on Friday, May 10 at 3 p.m.
