MONROE, La. – The ULM volleyball team dropped Friday's match to Troy, 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-19), at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
"I thought we served very well, but the problem is they served just a little better," ULM head coach Charlie Olson said. "They generated seven aces against us and that proved to be the difference maker ultimately."
In the first set, ULM used a four-point run on the back of Trojan errors to take a 9-6 lead. Troy closed out the set by scoring eight of the final nine points to go on top, 25-16.
ULM secured its first lead of the second set off of a ball-handling error from Troy at 7-6. A kill from senior Cali Assaley extended the lead to 11-7. Troy sliced into the ULM lead and jumped out in front at 17-16. ULM brought the game within one score due to another Trojan error at 22-21. However, Troy held off the ULM run to take the set, 25-22.
Set three opened up with two small leads from each team. ULM went ahead 6-4 off kills by Assaley and junior Kathryn Raschilla. The Trojans shifted the momentum in their favor when they took the lead from ULM at 10-9. Troy kept the Warhawks attacking unit at bay and won the match with a 25-19 win in the third set.
"We tried to match them skill for skill—we wanted to match their great blocking with our blocking and their outside with our outside play," Olson said.
Assaley led ULM with 18 kills on the night. Junior Mariana Volponi e Giordan handed out 18 assists. Junior Madeline Hogan finished with 26 digs.
The Warhawks meet South Alabama at 11 a.m. Sunday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Links to live video and stats are available on the volleyball schedule page at ULMWarhawks.com.
