MONROE, La. – The ULM volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-13) against South Alabama Sunday afternoon at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
The Jaguars fired on all cylinders, hitting .256 on the match to ULM's .112. USA (17-6 overall, 10-1 Sun Belt Conference) had 46 kills while the Warhawks (5-21, 1-10) tallied 23.
"Through the first two sets I felt we played good volleyball, but they beat us on the service line," ULM head coach Charlie Olson said.
South Alabama racked up eight service aces in the match to one for ULM.
The first set of action was all USA. The Jaguars started out with a 4-0 lead over the Warhawks. ULM managed to close the gap to just one score on two occasions, but the Jaguars kept the Warhawks from tying things up. USA pulled away late in the set to take a 25-18 win.
The Warhawks kept things in their favor for the first half of set two. ULM rose to a 4-2 lead with a kill from senior Cali Assaley. The Jaguars took the lead from ULM at 11-10 and carried this lead through the end of the set. The Warhawks briefly staved off set point with a three-point run, but the margin was too much to overcome as USA took a 2-0 lead with a 25-17 win in set two.
For a short while, ULM had a lead in the third set. ULM took a 3-1 lead. The Jaguars rolled out into the lead and doubled the Warhawks' score at 16-8. USA closed out the third set on a 7-2 run to win the set, 25-13, and the match, 3-0.
"We extended rallies against a team that has a pass-set-kill type of offense and we positioned ourselves to do good," Olson said. "But we couldn't finish those long rallies."
Assaley broke double-digits and finished with 10 kills. Junior Mariana Volponi e Giordan handed out 15 assists. Junior Madeline Hogan had nine digs in the match.
ULM opens a road swing at 6 p.m. Friday at Little Rock.
