LAFAYETTE, La. – Junior
Courtney Marten and senior
Theoni Zerva each scored a goal to surpass ULM's single-season points record as the Warhawks picked up their first-ever win over the Ragin' Cajuns in Lafayette, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at the Ragin' Cajun Track/Soccer Complex.
Freshman Lena Göppel and Marten scored goals in the first half for a 2-0 halftime advantage, while Zerva struck in the opening moments of the second half to extend the lead.
Marten and Zerva entered the day one point off Chelsea Shriner's single-season points record. Shriner tallied 28 points (10 goals, eight assists) in 2001. Zerva tied the record with an assist on Göppel's goal before Marten broke the record with her goal. Zerva then surpassed Marten with her goal in the second half. Zerva has 30 points (10 goals, 10 assists) while Marten has 29 points (14 goals, one assist).
Göppel opened the scoring for ULM (12-3-1 overall, 5-3-1 Sun Belt Conference) in the 14th minute, scoring on a header off a crossing pass, beating Ragin' Cajun goalkeeper Jordan Higgins in the lower left corner of the net. It was Göppel's second goal of the season, while Zerva earned her 10th assist and junior
Efi Brame earned her fourth.
ULM took advantage of a Ragin' Cajun (6-10-2, 3-5-2) mistake in the 26th minute. An errant kick by Higgins was collected by Marten, who fired on an open net from beyond the 18-yard box to double the lead to 2-0.
The Warhawks opened the second half quickly. Zerva scored off an assist by Göppel just 18 seconds into the half to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Ragin' Cajuns scored a goal in the 71st minute as Karleen Bedre took the clearing kick from ULM junior goalkeeper
Hailey Hillock and scored inside the 18-yard box to cut the gap to 3-1. However, the Cajuns mustered just two more shots on goal as the Warhawks held on for the win.
Hillock registered four saves in picking up the win.
Marten had three shots, including two on goal, to lead ULM, while Zerva had two shots, both on frame. The Warhawks outshot the Cajuns, 17-11, and put 11 shots on goal to six for the Cajuns.
The win was ULM's first in Lafayette in 11 tries, snapping an 0-9-1 skid.
