NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans struck for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a 6-0 deficit and held on to defeat ULM, 7-6, Friday night in the opening game of the weekend series at Maestri Field.
It appeared a pitchers' duel was unfolding through the first three innings as each team stranded just one runner on base.
ULM (1-1 overall) took control in the top of the fourth thanks to mistakes by the Privateers (3-2). After
Mason Holt singled and
Andrew Beesley walked to open the inning,
Wiley Cleland's bunt was thrown away by UNO pitcher Chris Turpin, allowing Holt to score for the 1-0 lead.
After
Ryan Humeniuk hit an infield single to third to load the bases,
Justin King's walk forced in a run for the 2-0 lead.
Logan Wurm was hit by a pitch to push the lead to 3-0 in the inning.
The Warhawks doubled the lead in the fifth inning.
Wiley Cleland's RBI single scored Holt, while
Grant Schulz earned an RBI when he was hit by a pitch, forcing home Beesley. A wild pitch allowed Cleland to score for the 6-0 lead.
The game flipped in the bottom of the fifth inning. UNO scored seven runs on just three hits with three walks, two hit batsmen and one error. Two wild pitches led to scores as an RBI single by Salo Iza and a 2-RBI single from Isaac Williams gave the Privateers a 7-6 lead.
The game turned back into a pitchers' duel for the final four innings. ULM's best chance to tie or take the lead came in the seventh inning, when Schulz and King each walked with two outs. However, Wurm struck out to end the inning.
Holt and Humeniuk had three hits apiece for ULM while Gaige Howard had a pair of hits for New Orleans.
Caleb Seroski picked up the win in relief, closing out the fifth inning by giving up no runs on one hit with one strikeout. Collin Kulivan worked a perfect ninth inning for the save.
Bryson Wrobel suffered the loss for ULM, coming on in the middle of the fifth inning. Wrobel gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit with one walk.
Ty Barnes pitched 4 1/3 innings in his first start of 2021, taking a no decision after giving up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
The two teams continue the series at 2 p.m. Saturday. Links to live video, audio and stats are available at ULMWarhawks.com.
