ULM Falls Short at Louisiana Tech, 2-0

RUSTON, La. – The ULM soccer team was shut out by I-20 foe Louisiana Tech, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at the Ruston Sports Complex.

"This was a game of two contrasting styles: one team that wanted to play progressively up the field and another that is extremely direct and dangerous from set plays," ULM head coach Sean Fraser said.

LA Tech's Elizabeth Doll scored the first goal of the match in the 42nd minute, putting the Lady Techsters up 1-0 at halftime. After ULM had several chances for the equalizer in the first 25 minutes of the second half, LA Tech's Erin Chung added the insurance goal in the 73rd minute for a 2-0 lead.

"Both goals are heavily avoidable today," Fraser said. "Hailey catches the first one nine times out of 10, and the second goal we failed to get compact enough from a throw in and gave too much space for a shot at the top of the box. We have to correct those things."

ULM finished with 14 shots and six on frame. Nine of ULM's shots came in the second half, but only one followed LA Tech's second goal of the match. LA Tech tallied 18 shots with 11 on goal as ULM goal keeper Hailey Hillock tallied nine saves. Maggie Boston had six saves for LA Tech.

"I'm encouraged by some of the things we did today," Fraser said. "The first 20 minutes we didn't get out of second gear, but once we did, we played some brilliant soccer throughout and with a little fine tuning and some of the kids that are to come in, we feel really good about the team."

Individually, Janet Stopka, Victoria Altieri and Thenia Zervas had three shots each with Zervas putting two on goal.

"Moving forward, our game model is coming along, our ability to create chances is coming along and while we need to improve our aerial prowess and our physicality, I've seen enough recently to suggest that big things are on the horizon from us," Fraser said.

The Warhawks continue their road swing to close the 2020-21 season with a match at 5 p.m. Friday at Alcorn State.
