NORMAN, Okla. – ULM's
Jacelyn Buck and
Jayden Mount came through with clutch hits in the sixth inning against Sam Houston State, helping the Warhawks score two runs and claim an 8-6 victory in the final game of the Courtyard Marriott Tournament, hosted by the University of Oklahoma on Sunday, March 7.
Tied at six-all in the bottom of the sixth inning,
Caley McGuff led off with a base hit to first. Two batters later, with Buck at the plate, McGuff moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Buck reached on a base knock to centerfield, which allowed the speedy McGuff to score the go-ahead run.
Mount followed with an RBI, scoring Buck from second, as ULM assumed the 8-6 lead. The Bearkats pitching staff forced a pair of grounders to close the inning, but the Sam Houston State offense was shut down in the top of the seventh, ending any threat of a rally.
ULM enjoyed its first multi-run inning of the game in the second when a single down the left field line by
Madison Blount loaded the bases for
Kennedy Page. Page reached base after being hit by a pitch, giving the Warhawks a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Kreps connected on a two-out double to left, allowing Blount to trot home for the final two runs of the frame.
Sam Houston State (3-8) got two runs back in the top of the third, but the Warhawks responded with their second three-run inning in the home half of the inning. The third began with a single up the middle by Mount, who quickly moved to second on a stolen base. Fletcher followed in the ULM lineup with a single to short, putting runners at the corners for Edwards.
Edwards delivered an RBI single to right center, scoring Mount as ULM moved in front 4-2.
Kelsey Giddens dropped a sacrifice bunt that moved Edwards to second and Fletcher to third with one out in the inning.
Blount came through with an RBI double to left centerfield, scoring Fletcher for the second run of the inning. Two batters later, McGuff reached on an error that scored Edwards as ULM forged ahead 6-2.
Sam Houston State combined for four runs on five hits in the fourth and fifth innings, pulling even with the Warhawks at six-all.
ULM, which pounded out 10 hits in the game, had a pair of multi-hit performances from Mount (2-4, RBI, run, double) and Blount (3-3, RBI, run, double).
Adrianna Chavarria tossed 3 1/3 innings for the Warhawks, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits while striking out two Bearkat hitters.
Gianni Hulett came out of the bullpen to earn her second win of the season, allowing four hits and one run in 3 2/3 innings on the mound.
Missouri 20, ULM 0 (5 Innings)
The No. 18 Missouri softball team had four multi-run innings, including a 12-run fourth, as it earned a 20-0 win over the Warhawks in the morning game on Sunday. The Tigers (15-3) capped off the game with 18 hits with five hitters finishing with at least two hits in the game.
ULM (3-11) was led at the plate by the combination of
Korie Kreps (1-2, double) and
Jacelyn Buck, who finished 1-for-1 in the game.
The Warhawks begin a five-game homestand on Wednesday, March 10, when they host Grambling State in a doubleheader. That will be followed by a three-game series against Sun Belt Conference foe Coastal Carolina, which takes place on Saturday, March 13 (doubleheader) and Sunday, March 14.
