MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama softball team earned its sixth straight home series win over ULM on Sunday, April 25 when the Jaguars earned a 4-2 win in the first game and triumphed 5-2 in the second game of the Sun Belt Conference bout between the two teams.
GAME 1: SOUTH ALABAMA 5, ULM 2
The Jaguars capitalized on a three-run first inning as they claimed the 4-2 win.
Mackenzie Brasher was the first Jaguar batter of the game to reach base after being hit by a pitch on a full count. She quickly stole second before teammate Victoria Ortiz drew a walk from ULM starting pitcher
Gianni Hulett. Two batters later, shortstop Kennedy Cronan lifted a three-run home run over the left field wall to give South Alabama a 3-0 advantage.
In the top of the third, ULM's
Madison Blount worked the count in her favor to draw a leadoff walk.
Korie Kreps kept the inning alive with a double to left that moved pinch runner
Caley McGuff to third with two outs.
Andie Edwards followed in the lineup, delivering a single to left, as both McGuff and Kreps scored to pull the Warhawks within one, 3-2.
The lead remained one until the bottom of the sixth when Kamdyn Kvistad connected on a leadoff home run to right centerfield as South Alabama assumed the 4-2 lead.
Edwards proved to be the primary point of offense for the Warhawks, finishing 1-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs. Kreps and teammate
Jayden Mount both had doubles in the game.
Hulett (4-6) scattered four runs on five hits while striking out two South Alabama hitters along the way. Olivia Lackie (15-6) picked up the complete game victory, surrendering two runs on six hits while fanning seven ULM sluggers.
GAME 2: SOUTH ALABAMA 5, ULM 2
ULM (13-26, 4-12 Sun Belt) got its offense started early in the first when Kreps singled to first to reach base with one out. Two batters later,
Madelyn Fletcher delivered a single to second, moving the runner into scoring position.
Kennedy Johnson loaded the bases with a fielder's choice before a single to short by
Rylee Lara allowed Kreps to move home from third for the 1-0 lead.
The Warhawk lead grew to 2-0 in the top of the second when
Jayden Mount drew a two-out walk. Kreps followed with a single to third, moving Blount to second. Edwards continued the inning with a single up the middle and after a throwing error Mount trotted home for the 2-0 advantage.
South Alabama (25-13, 12-5 Sun Belt) turned to Kvistad, who singlehandedly cut the lead to 2-1 with a home run to left centerfield. Two innings later, Kvistad came through with a double to left that brought home Victoria Ortiz, knotting the game at 2-2.
After limiting the Warhawks to just three hits over three innings, South Alabama took advantage of a three-run, four-hit fifth to assume the 5-2 lead. The first of those runs crossed the plate when Abby Allen connected on a double to right that plated Meredith Keel along with Mackenzie Brasher, who took advantage of a throwing error. Ortiz followed with a single up the middle that scored teammate Caroline Nichols for the final run of the game.
The Warhawks had three hitters with multiple hits in the game, including Lara (3-4, RBI, double), Mount (2-3, run) and Kreps (2-4, run). Hulett made the start, tossing 3 1/3 innings and allowing four hits and two runs before giving way to
Adrianna Chavarria.
Chavarria (1-9) suffered the setback after surrendering four hits and three runs in one inning on the mound.
Murphy Williams tossed 1 2/3 innings for ULM, allowing two hits and converting a strikeout.
ULM will return to the field on Wednesday, April 28, at McNeese State. The game wraps up a five-game road stretch for the Warhawks.
