MONROE, La. – UT Arlington's Carlos Tavera, Tanner King and Logan Austin combined to limit ULM to three hits as the Mavericks took Friday night's series opener over ULM, 6-1, at Warhawk Field.
Tavera (2-4), coming off nine no-hit innings in last week's 1-0 11 inning combined no-hitter vs. Little Rock, allowed a run on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts over six innings to lead UTA (23-23 overall, 11-6 Sun Belt) past ULM (20-22, 7-12).
UTA took the lead for good in the second inning when Anthony Dominguez belted a 2-run home run to right field. The Mavericks added to the lead in the fourth inning on JD Wadleigh's RBI double for the 3-0 advantage.
ULM broke up a stretch of 15 consecutive no-hit innings for Tavera with
Travis Washburn's leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Washburn stole second,
Mason Holt picked up a walk.
Ryan Humeniuk's sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out.
Andrew Beesley's groundout to second plated Washburn to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Warhawks had few scoring chances.
Logan Wurm picked up a one-out single in the fifth inning but was stranded on first. Washburn and Humeniuk earned walks in the sixth inning but were stranded. Washburn singled again in the eighth inning and Holt walked with two outs before a groundout ended the frame.
UTA expanded the lead with two runs in the seventh inning. Dominguez picked up his third hit and third RBI with an RBI single and Josh Minjarez added a sacrifice fly. Connor Aube's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning increased the lead to 6-1.
Ty Barnes (2-5) pitched 3 1/3 innings in his final career start at Warhawk Field. The senior allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
