Warhawks Post Shutout at Grambling, 1-0

GRAMBLING, La. – Courtney Marten scored off an assist from Mara Grutkamp in the 68th minute and Hailey Hillock posted her second-consecutive clean sheet in goal as the ULM soccer team moved to 3-0 for the first time since 2014 with a 1-0 win at Grambling State Sunday afternoon, Aug. 29.

Sunday's match was moved up six hours from a 5 p.m. kickoff to 11 a.m. due to the impending effects of Hurricane Ida.

It is the third time in program history ULM has opened a season 3-0, joining the 2008 and 2014 squads. The 2014 team is the only Warhawk squad to open the season 4-0.

"I thought we dominated the game today and probably should have come away with a couple more goals," ULM head coach Sean Fraser said. "The girls' resilience, energy and execution of our game plan were first class again."

Marten's first goal of the season and fourth of her ULM career gave the Warhawks all the cushion they would need. Grutkamp picked up her third assist of the season.

ULM fired 11 shots in the match with just three on goal, while Grambling had six shots with four on frame. All six of GSU's shots came in the second half.

Hillock collected four saves for her second shutout of the season and third solo shutout of her career.

"I'm proud of our body of work so far, but we know there's another level inside of us that we need to work on bringing out," Fraser said. "Hopefully everyone can stay safe through the weather and we can get back to working as soon as possible."

The Warhawks host Nicholls at 7 p.m. Thursday at Brown Stadium.
