Hot-Shooting Mavericks Down Warhawks, 77-50

ARLINGTON, Texas – UTA used a 17-2 run to close the first quarter and never looked back, as the Mavericks rolled to a 77-50 win over ULM Thursday afternoon in an Education Day game at the College Park Center.
 
Students from Dallas-Fort Worth area elementary, middle and high schools filled the lower bowl of the College Park Center, creating a raucous environment.
 
The Mavericks shot 53.7% from the field (29-of-54) and hit 9-of-16 3-point attempts (56.3%) while ULM shot 29.5% (18-of-61) and did not connect from deep, going 0-for-7.
 
Starr Jacobs led three Mavericks in double figures with 17 points. Second-year freshman Kyren Whittington led ULM with 15 points, a season-high six rebounds and three assists. Fifth-year senior Kierra Crockett picked up 10 points.
 
UTA scored the first five points of the game, with three early points from Terryn Milton. ULM answered back with free throws and a bucket by Whittington and a basket from Kierra Crockett to get within a point at 7-6. UTA closed the final 4:53 of the quarter on a 17-2 run, knocking down four 3-pointers in the burst, to lead 24-8 after one.
 
The Mavericks extended the lead to as much as 19 in the second quarter, going up 33-14 on a 3-pointer by Claire Chastain with 6:24 to play before halftime. ULM scored the next six points with Crockett picking up a second-chance basket, Whittington scoring on a fast break and Amaya Ford scoring on the break, thanks to a cross-court diagonal feed from Whittington, to get within six at 33-20. UTA rebuilt its lead down the stretch, outscoring ULM 9-4 over the final 3:30 to lead 42-24 at halftime.
 
UTA wouldn't let ULM any closer than 16 in the second half. The Mavericks extended the lead to 20 at 46-26 on a layup by Shyia Smith. The two sides traded points for the remainder of the quarter, with ULM getting no closer than 18 and UTA leading by no more than 23, as UTA led 61-39 to the fourth quarter.
 
The Mavericks led by as much as 32 in the final quarter before going on to the 77-50 win.
 
ULM is back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday at Texas State.
