ULM Softball Closes Out Best on the Bayou Classic With Perfect 5-0 Record

MONROE, La. – ULM closed out the "Best of the Bayou Classic" with a perfect 5-0 record after recording victories over SFA (3-1) and Southern (10-1, 6 Inn.) Sunday at the Ouachita Sportsplex. The Warhawks outscored its five opponents, 43-7, over the three-day, season-opening tournament.

"Five different pitchers had a win for us this weekend, which is incredible to accomplish in our first weekend out," ULM softball coach Molly Fichtner said. "(Madison) Blount and (Kelsey Giddens) Kels also played a huge role behind the plate in the pitching staff's success this weekend.

"Our hitters showed up and showed out consistently all weekend."

ULM is off to its best start to a season since 2006 when the Warhawks opened 10-0.

The Warhawks open their home schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 16 against Jackson State at 5:30 p.m. at the ULM Softball Complex.

"The season is a marathon, not a sprint," Fichtner said. "It was a great weekend for us, and we're going to enjoy it tonight, but we definitely have some things to improve on before our next game."

ULM 3, SFA 1

In her first career start, true freshman Kinsey Kackley pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit with 10 strikeouts and four walks while Madelyn Fletcher went 2-for-2 with three RBIs as ULM defeated SFA, 3-1, in Sunday's first game.

"SFA is an extremely competitive program, and for Kinsey to throw a one-hitter in her first start as a pitcher is very exciting," Fichtner said. "She's a competitor, and we couldn't have asked for a better performance in the circle.

"Fletch was clutch all day for us. She is so even-keeled in big-time situations, and she came through for us today when we needed it."

Kackley (1-0) struck out the side in the top of the second inning while working around a two-out throwing error.

Ashlan Ard drew a walk to open the bottom of the second and Andie Edwards followed with a single through the left side. After Korie Kreps moved up the runners with a sacrifice bunt, Fletcher delivered a two-run single to right field as ULM jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Kackley again struck out the side in the third inning after walking the bases loaded. She retired seven SFA batters during one stretch.

With one away in the bottom of the fifth, Fletcher hit a solo home run to left field to extend ULM's lead to 3-0.

SFA's Camryn Middebrook opened the top of the sixth with a single down the left-field line. With one out, Middlebrook scored on a three-base throwing error as the Ladyjacks cut their deficit to 3-1. Kackley stranded pinch runner Mikaelah Burkland at third, recording a pop out to shortstop and a fly out to left field.

The Ladyjacks (1-4) put the potential game-tying runners on base in the seventh, thanks to a walk and throwing error. With two outs and runners at first and third, Gianni Hulett came out of the bullpen to record the final out and her first save of the season by getting Middlebrook to foul out to Fletcher.

SFA starter Kassidy Wilbur (0-1) took the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits in six innings with five strikeouts and one walk.

ULM 10, Southern 1 (6 Inn.)
ULM's top five hitters in the lineup went a combined 10-for-15 and drove in seven runs while Hulett, Victoria Abrams and Kassidy Giddens teamed up to pitch a four-hitter as the Warhawks cruised to a 10-1 win over Southern in six innings Sunday afternoon to close out the season-opening tournament.

"It was a great staff effort between Gianni, Victoria, and Kassidy," Fichtner said. "Our hitters did a great job at the plate, executing runs."

ULM (5-0) sent seven batters to the plate in the bottom of the first and scored three runs, including two unearned, on three hits and two errors. Lourdes Bacon opened the frame with a single and stole second, and Kreps followed with an RBI single up the middle. Ard reached on a three-base throwing error by the third baseman, scoring Kreps from first. Fletcher added an RBI groundout to shortstop, scoring Ard from third.

The Warhawks scored two unearned runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

Southern's Cameron Andrews and Kalea Brown greeted Abrams with back-to-back singles in the top of the fourth. Three batters later, Alana Mark delivered a two-out, RBI single, scoring Andrews from third, as the Lady Jaguars cut their deficit to 5-1.

ULM answered with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Bacon doubled to right field and scored on Kreps' RBI triple to right field. Alexis Chavez followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Kreps, as the Warhawks built a 7-1 advantage.

The Warhawks loaded the bases against reliever Julia York in the bottom of the sixth as Bacon singled, Kreps walked and Chavez singled. Fletcher greeted Southern starter Raquel Latta, who reentered the game, with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Bacon from third. Edwards walked off the game with a two-run double to left field that scored Kreps and Chavez.

Hulett (1-0) allowed one hit over three scoreless innings to earn the win to go along with two strikeouts. Abrams permitted one run and three hits in two innings of work with one strikeout. After Southern's lead-off hitter reached in the sixth, Gibbens retired the next three in a row.

Latta, who went five-plus innings, took the loss for Southern after allowing seven runs, including three earned, on 10 hits with one strikeout and two walks.
