ULM Softball Continues Winning Ways with 12-0 Run-Rule Win over Jackson State

Warhawks record second no-hitter of 2022 as Hulett picks up second win of season.

MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (6-0) extended its win streak to six games with a 12-0 run-rule (5 inn.) victory over Jackson State (5-2) in the home opener Wednesday evening. The Warhawks recorded their second combined no-hitter of the young season and compiled 13 hits en route to their sixth win in as many games.

Sophomore Gianni Hulett picked up her second win of the season as she threw three innings and Victoria Abrams and Kinsey Kackley each pitched an inning to combine for the Warhawks' second no-hitter this season. Three Warhawks, Kennedy Page, Madelyn Fletcher and Korie Kreps, each had two hits for six of the 13 total in the win. Page hit her first home run of the year to drive in two runs in the fourth inning with a team-best three RBI for the game.

ULM put up runs quickly, grabbing a 5-0 lead on five hits and taking advantage of a Jackson State error in the first inning. Fletcher's single drove in Kreps, who had singled, and Gabby Davila, who had reached first on the Tiger error. Ashlyn Ard moved Fletcher to third on her single, then stole second, her third stolen base of the season. Kelsey Giddens singled with two outs to bring Fletcher across the plate and Andie Edwards' single scored Ard and Giddens.

"Kennedy Page had an incredible day today and this is our second no-hitter in just our first six games," ULM head coach Molly Fichtner said. "We put the gas pedal down from the first pitch of the game. For our pitchers to go out there for a combined no-hitter, the second one in our first six games, and face only 15 batters, that was a big deal for us."

The Warhawks added four more runs in the bottom of the third with Page driving in Alexis Chavez after she led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. Page's first RBI of the game came on her two-out single to bring Chavez in and then she scored after Kreps drove in both Page and Lourdes Bacon with a triple down the right-field line. Kreps made it 9-0, crossing the plate after Davila reached first base and advanced to second after the Tiger shortstop error.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, ULM's Madison Blount walked and Jackson State's third error of the night turned Kennedy Johnson's single into a three-base hit. Blount crossed the plate on the error for a 10-0 lead. Johnson scored on Page's homer for the Warhawks' 12th run.

Jackson State batters went three up and three down in the final four innings. Only one Tiger batter reached base after being hit by a pitch to start the game and then called out on a line drive double-play.

"At practice Tuesday, we talked about avoiding complacency at all costs and getting after it," Fichtner said. "After the weekend's games, we found some weaknesses where we needed to get better and that's what we did. It's one-pitch-at-a-time mentality and we know this season is a marathon and not a sprint. We are going to respect our opponent and give them our best game."

The Warhawks play next in the Golden Eagle Invitational in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, with five games scheduled for the weekend, starting with a single game Friday, Feb. 18 against Houston Baptist at 10 a.m. CT.
