ULM Softball Opens Weekend Series with Troy with Shutout Victory

Victoria Abrams Allows Only Three Hits in 1-0 Victory Friday Evening

TROY, Ala. – With its 1-0 victory Friday evening, the ULM softball team shut out a conference opponent for the first time in the regular season since 2018. Redshirt freshman Victoria Abrams posted her fifth win of the season in a complete game, allowing only three hits and only nine Trojan baserunners.

"It's been a minute since we have shut out someone in that fashion," said ULM head coach Molly Fichtner. "For Victoria to give up only three hits, it was incredible to watch her go out there and do that and keep an incredible offense from scoring for seven innings. I want to give a shout-out to Madison Blount. She was the catcher for Victoria tonight and they work well together. A great performance like that doesn't happen without a great catcher and pitching coach to call the pitches like Coach Wodach."

Friday evening's 1-0 win over Troy was its first since the 2019 season (the teams did not play in 2020). The Warhawks broke the Trojans' four-game win streak in the series after Troy swept the 2021 series in 2021 and also won a postseason meeting in the Sun Belt Conference Championship.

ULM (16-6, 3-2) struck first in the opening frame when Kennedy Johnson doubled down the right-field line with two outs. She scored the Warhawks' first, and only run when Andie Edwards reached base on a fly ball to short center that was misplayed.

"It was key for us to keep the W.I.N. – What's Important Now mentality," Fichtner said. "Troy's Leanna Johnson is an exceptional pitcher, so we knew going in that opportunities might be limited. It was awesome to see her and Victoria go at it in a low-scoring pitchers' duel. She (Leanna Johnson)  is one of the best pitchers in the conference if not the best that we're going to face, so it was awesome to get a win like that."

Leanna Johnson (10-3) took the loss as the pitcher of record for Troy (16-7, 2-2), allowing three Warhawk hits in seven innings. She struck out eight and walked only one batter, Korie Kreps. ULM's single run was unearned as the Trojans committed two errors in the game.
