MONROE, La. – Georgia State's bullpen slowed ULM's offense as the Panthers held off the Warhawks for an 8-5 win Sunday afternoon at Warhawk Field, salvaging a game from the weekend series.
Both teams got off to an explosive start to open the game.
Cameron Jones belted a 3-run home run and DeAngelo Abboud added an RBI single in the top of the first to stake GSU to a 4-0 lead.
ULM answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior
Mason Holt homered on the first pitch of the inning, while sophomore
Michelle Artzberger added an RBI on a groundout and junior
Travis Washburn picked up an RBI with an infield single with two outs to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Warhawks tied the game at 4 in the second inning on senior
Ryan Cupit's RBI single to plate Holt.
GSU regained the lead in the third inning when Abboud hit a sacrifice fly to score Griffin Cheney. The Panthers added another run in the fifth inning when Abboud hit an RBI single to bring home Caleb Stewart, expanding the lead to 6-4.
Georgia State did not allow ULM to score from the third through eighth innings. ULM's best chance came in the sixth inning, when Holt opened the inning with a single but was caught attempting to steal second base. Cupit followed with a walk but was thrown out trying to score on senior
Grant Schulz's double off the left-center field wall.
GSU added two runs in the top of the ninth inning when Luke Boynton reached on a throwing error, allowing Kyle Riesselmann to score on the play. Kyle Hilton then picked up an RBI single to plate Boynton for an 8-4 lead.
ULM picked up a solo home run from senior
Colby Deaville off the left field foul pole in the bottom of the ninth but was unable to get any closer in the 8-5 loss.
Chad Treadway threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the GSU bullpen for the win, allowing three hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Jones earned the save, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings.
Tylor Jans (0-3) suffered the loss despite one of his best outings of the season, coming out of the bullpen to allow two runs on five hits with no walks or strikeouts in four innings.
Holt matched a career-high with four hits, including a double and home run. Schulz had a season-high three hits. Max Ryerson and Jones had three hits each for GSU while Jones and Abboud had three RBIs apiece.
ULM visits LSU at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
