BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU used a six-run first inning to take control and then pulled away in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings for a 15-4 win over ULM Tuesday night at Alex Box Stadium.
ULM (8-14-1 overall) started strong when senior
Mason Holt blasted a leadoff solo home run in the first inning, hitting the scoreboard in left-center field. Holt added a 2-run homer to left in the fourth inning and has now hit six homers in the last 10 games.
LSU answered Holt's first blast with a six-run bottom of the first inning. A key error with one out extended the inning, with Brayden Jobert coming through with a bases-clearing double as the big hit in the frame. Jobert added a pair of homers later in the game and finished with seven RBIs.
The Tigers extended the lead with a solo home run by Gavin Dugas in the third inning to go up 7-1.
ULM cut into the gap in the fourth inning when sophomore
Matthew Lee had a sacrifice bunt with an RBI before Holt's 2-run homer, getting within 7-4.
Jobert hit a solo homer in the sixth and Cade Doughty followed later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 9-4.
In the seventh, LSU put up four runs on one hit. A walk and two hit batsmen loaded the bases. A passed ball allowed Dylan Crews to score and Jobert's second homer of the night, a 3-run blast, pushed the lead to 13-4.
The Tigers tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning, using free passes and a sacrifice fly to score two times without a hit.
In addition to Holt, Schulz also had two hits for ULM.
LSU's Trent Vietmeier (1-0) picked up the win, throwing two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, walking two and striking out four. ULM junior
Mikel Howell (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on five hits with one walk in 2/3 of an inning. The Warhawks used 10 pitchers in the game.
