Warhawks Drop Opener to App State, 5-1

MONROE, La. – ULM was limited to just three hits while two critical defensive mistakes late allowed App State to stretch the lead on its way to a 5-1 win Friday night in the series opener at Warhawk Field.

App (12-23 overall, 4-12 Sun Belt Conference) jumped on top with the first batter of the game. Andrew Terrell hit a leadoff homer to left field, his first of the season, to put the Mountaineers on top, 1-0.

ULM (13-22-1, 5-10-1) tied the game at 1 in the third when Ryan Cupit hit an RBI single to left to score Carson Jones. It was the third and final hit of the game for the Warhawks. With runners still on the corners and one out, a strike out and ground out ended ULM's threat without taking the lead.

App regained the lead in the fourth inning on Jacob Whitley's sacrifice fly to score Austin St. Laurent, who led off the inning with a single.

ULM had a chance to answer right back in the bottom of the fourth, using three walks to load the bases and chase App State starter Tyler Tuthill from the game. However, Eli Ellington entered and struck out Mason Holt on three pitches to end the inning.

The Warhawks were unable to get anything going against Ellington, picking up two walks and two hit batters, but one runner was picked off and another was caught stealing. Ellington (1-2) earned the win in relief with 4 1/3 hitless and scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Cam Barlow (2-5) was saddled with his fourth consecutive loss but gave ULM a chance. He allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 5 2/3 innings.

App State added to the lead late. In the seventh inning, the Mountaineers loaded the bases with one out. Mikel Howell struck out Luke Drumheller for the second out and had Phillip Cole to two strikes before a wild pitch allowed Dylan Rogers to score and double the lead, 3-1.

App State added two runs in the eighth as Rogers reached on an infield single with two outs to score Hayden Cross. Alex Aguila then reached on an error to allow Cross to score, extending the lead to 5-1.

Cupit, Holt and Jones had the hits for ULM. Terrell, Cole and Cross had two hits each for App.

The series continues at 2 p.m. Saturday at Warhawk Field.
