MONROE, La. – ULM made all three of its shots on goal count, scoring on all three while adding another goal on a Southern Miss own goal, as the Warhawks picked up their first Sun Belt Conference win of the season, 4-1, Thursday night at Brown Stadium.
Mara Grutkamp led the charge for ULM with a goal and two assists, while
Mickaela Leal made five saves in goal.
The Warhawks (9-1-1 overall, 1-1 SBC), which entered the contest sitting third in NCAA Division I in shots per game, were limited to just nine shot attempts. However, ULM made the most of its opportunities.
ULM struck first in the 27th minute. Grutkamp sent a corner kick to the top right corner of the box, where
Inge Konst fired a shot up and over the mass of players gathered in front of the goal, including the outstretched arms of Southern Miss goal keeper Alex Helbling, putting ULM up 1-0. It was the sixth goal of the season for Konst.
The score held to halftime.
In the second half, ULM doubled its lead in the 58th minute. Off a free kick, Konst struck the ball above the top left corner of the box, floating it in front of the net. A Southern Miss player went up and met the ball with her head, deflecting it into the right side of the goal to put ULM on top, 2-0.
Ten minutes later, Grutkamp added to the lead.
Eve Blakey dribbled just inside the top of the box before sending a pass out to the right of the box for Grutkamp, who unleashed a shot past Helbling and into the net for the 3-0 advantage. It was Grutkamp's third goal of the season.
ULM capped its scoring in the 83rd minute when Grutkamp fired a cross from the left of the box to the front of the net, where
Courtney Marten headed it in for her first goal of the season and the 18th of her career, putting her alone in second place in the ULM career record book, trailing Cindy Barker (22 goals, 2000-03) by four goals.
Grutkamp's two assists give her six for the season to lead the Warhawks and tie her for fifth-most assists in a single season. Her 11 career assists rank her in a tie for sixth in ULM history with Mary Ashton Lembo (2013-16).
Southern Miss (1-5-1, 1-1) picked up a goal in the 88th minute from Mallory Tapper with an assist to Ilana Izquierdo to spoil the shutout.
The Warhawks visit Texas State at 1 p.m. Sunday.
