MONROE, La. – ULM completed a series sweep of Georgia State, 3-2 (23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11), Friday evening at the ULM Activities Center.
With the Fant-Ewing Coliseum roof under repairs and a persistent rain throughout the day, water leaked into Fant-Ewing Coliseum, forcing the match to initially be delayed from a 2 p.m. first serve before being moved to the Activities Center for a 7 p.m. first serve.
The win marks the first three-match winning streak within Sun Belt Conference play for ULM since joining the SBC prior to the 2006 season.
It's also the first time since the Molly Howard Gerwig Memorial Tournament in 2022 where the Warhawks (7-23 overall, 3-13 Sun Belt) have won three straight games overall.
In the first set, ULM started fast with a 6-1 lead. The Panthers (5-22, 2-14) used a 6-1 scoring run of their own to tie the game.
After a back-and-forth affair, the Warhawks held a 20-17 lead, but Georgia State scored four-straight points to take the lead. It used the momentum to win the first set.
In set two, ULM again started fast, this time with a 9-3 lead. The Warhawks kept their foot on the gas and never looked back. At the end of the set, ULM finished with a 12-point victory.
It was the Panthers who jumped out to a lead in set three with a 4-0 start. The Warhawks proceeded to score a 7-2 run to gain the advantage. With the two teams fighting to a 16-16 tie, ULM scored six out of the next seven points to take a five-point lead. A final 3-0 run ended the set, and the Warhawks went up 2-1.
Similar to the last match, the Panthers weren't done just yet. After the Warhawks held a narrow 6-5 lead, Georgia State used a 4-1 scoring run to take the lead. Both teams fought to a 22-20 Panther lead before a 3-1 run ended set four and forced a fifth set.
After a 2-2 start, the Warhawks caught fire and scored five in a row. They used a 4-1 run to gain control of the set. The Panthers tried to fight back with a 5-1 run, but it was too late as ULM finished the job and ended the season on a high note.
Top performers for the Warhawks included
Ariana Brown and
Brynn Botkin, who had 15 and 14 kills each. Botkin also produced 28 digs and a blocked shot.
Bailey Roberson broke the 20 mark with 24 assists and had 24 digs.
ULM opens play at the Sun Belt Conference Championship at 5 p.m. Wednesday against East Division No. 6 seed App State in Foley, Alabama.
