MONROE, La. – SIUE scored all eight of its runs over the final four innings, erasing a 4-0 deficit and picking up an 8-5 win over ULM to claim the series, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Lou St. Amant Field.
Entering the sixth inning trailing 4-0, SIUE used a two-out rally to tie the game. Josh Ohl's RBI single scored Chase Bloomer for the first run of the game for the Cougars. Avery Owusu-Asiedu followed with a two-RBI double down the right-field line to score Brady Bunten and Ohl, bringing SIUE within a run, 4-3. An infield single by Matthew Klein extended the inning, allowing John Stallcup to add an RBI double to left to tie the game at 4.
SIUE then claimed the lead in the seventh on Bunten's RBI single, plating Bloomer for the 5-4 advantage.
The Cougars stretched the lead to three in the eighth inning. Two walks and an error loaded the bases with no outs. Brennan Orf's fielder's choice allowed Stallcup to score for the 6-4 lead. With two outs, Ole Arntson singled back through the middle to drive in Drew Mize to push the lead to three, 7-4.
ULM tried to close the gap in the bottom of the eighth inning. Singles by
Michelle Artzberger and
Riley Davis and a walk by
Zack Floyd loaded the bases with no outs. After
Jake Haggard struck out,
Jayson Zmejkoski hit an RBI single to center, scoring Artzberger to get within 7-5. However,
Chenar Brown grounded into an inning-ending double play as SIUE stayed in front by two to the ninth.
SIUE added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Stallcup reached on a fielding error, allowing Owusu-Asiedu to score to take the lead back to three again, 8-5.
ULM put
Kade Dupont on base in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out walk, but Artzberger's strike out ended the game.
The Warhawks started the game strong, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Artzberger's RBI single scored
Shawn Dalton Weatherbee. Davis followed with an RBI double to deep center, bringing home Dupont. Floyd capped the scoring in the inning with an RBI groundout that allowed Artzberger to score for the 3-0 lead.
ULM added another run in the fifth inning, as an RBI groundout by Artzberger brought home
Cardell Thibodeaux for the 4-0 lead.
Chipper Menard cruised through five innings before running into trouble in the sixth in the start for ULM. He threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with one walk and a career-high seven strikeouts.
Steve Owings (0-1) suffered the loss in relief, allowing a run on three hits in 1/3 of an inning.
Garrett Helsel (1-0) earned the win in relief for SIUE, allowing a run on three hits over 1 2/3 innings. Zeus Ponder locked down his third save, and second of the series, by throwing two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with two walks and three strikeouts.
Thibodeaux, Weatherbee, Artzberger and Davis each had two hits for ULM, with Artzberger adding two RBIs. Owusu-Asiedu led SIUE with three hits and two RBIs, while Orf and Mize had two hits each and Stallcup also had two RBIs.
ULM meets Grambling for a midweek matchup at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lou St. Amant Field.
