ODU Takes Friday Night Game Over ULM in 10, 5-3

MONROE, La. – Two errors led directly to a pair of runs for Old Dominion in the top of the 10th inning, as the Monarchs picked up a 5-3 win over ULM in 10 innings Friday night in the Sun Belt Conference opener at Lou St. Amant Field.

The first-ever meeting between ODU and ULM was a classic. With the game tied at 3 in the top of the 10th inning, ODU's Luke Waters reached base safely on a throwing error with one out. A sacrifice bunt by Josh Trujillo moved him to second base. After Hunter Fitz-Gerald was intentionally walked, Alex Bouche singled back through the middle to drive home Waters. An errant throw to third base allowed Fitz-Gerald to score on the play as well, putting the Monarchs up, 5-3. John Holobetz (1-1) retired the side in the bottom of the 10th, inducing a game-ending double-play ball to secure the victory.

Holobetz threw 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for ODU to earn the win, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts. Carson Orton (1-2) suffered the tough-luck loss, throwing the final inning, allowing two unearned runs on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. Cam Barlow allowed two runs on three hits with one walk and a season-high nine strikeouts over six innings in the start for ULM, while Blake Morgan gave up two runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts over five innings for ODU.

ODU opened the scoring with a solo home run by Thomas Wheeler to right field in the second inning. ULM answered with two runs in the fifth inning, as Chenar Brown picked up an RBI double following Jake Haggard's double to tie the game at 1. Cardell Thibodeaux drove in Brown with an RBI single for the 2-1 advantage.

ODU responded in the top of the sixth inning as Fitz-Gerald hit a solo homer to right to tie the game at 2. The Monarchs regained the lead, 3-2, on Tyler Wheeler's RBI single to score Kenny Levari in the seventh inning.

ULM bounced back in the eighth inning, as Kade Dupont's RBI single scored pinch-runner Travis Washburn to tie the game at 3. After a double by Riley Davis, ULM had runners at second and third with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts by Holobetz brought the threat to an end with the game still tied at 3.

Tyler Wheeler had two hits to lead ODU while Jake Haggard had two hits for ULM.

The series continues at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lou St. Amant Field.
