LAFAYETTE, La. – The ULM women's track & field team won six events and had 13 Top-5 finishers, while the men had nine Top-5 placings at the outdoor season opener Friday and Saturday at the Louisiana Classics.
Kimone Campbell and
Eunice Ilunga Mbuyi paced the women, winning two events each. Campbell took the 800 meters in 2:11.62 and the 1500 in a personal-best time of 4:35.42. Mbuyi won the long jump at 19-0.5 (5.80 meters) and the triple jump at 41-3.75 (12.59 meters). Mbuyi's triple jump ranks as the best in the SBC and ninth best in NCAA Division I, while her long jump is third in the SBC.
The other women's winners included
Brittney Roberson in the 400 in 57.75 and
Brianna Washington in the discus with a throw of 153-9 (46.87 meters).
Mbuyi's success in the long jump and triple jump was just the beginning of the success for the ULM women in the jumps on Saturday. The Warhawks took four of the top five spots in the long jump.
Nasya Ramirez was second with a leap of 19-0 (5.79 meters),
Olaia Becerril Alvarez was third at 18-10 (5.74 meters) and
Khrystyan Reddic tied for fourth at 18-1.5 (5.52).
Amanda Radava followed behind Campbell in the 800, placing second in a personal-best time of 2:11.81.
Paula Vaquera Cervantes finished second to Campbell in the 1500 in 4:38.45.
In the throws,
Sydney Lake was fourth in the hammer at 155-3 (47.32 meters) and
Harlie Medrano was fourth in the discus at 130-11 (39.92 meters).
Along with Campbell in the 1500 and Radava in the 800, four other women's athletes set personal bests, with
Di'Keriun Straughter in the 400 (1:00.45),
Ansley Long in the 5000 (18:35.56),
Emily Allen in the 5000 (21:17.59) and
Sohalia Schoen in the 1500 (5:08.34).
On the men's side,
Brandon Lewis had the best day, finishing runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles in 54.89.
Jona Fruchtmann was third in the javelin in his collegiate debut at 187-11 (57.28 meters).
Five Warhawks claimed fourth place in their respective events.
Devin Bilbo was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.86.
Juwan Blignaut was fourth in both the 800 (1:57.46) and the 1500 (3:59.05).
Jordan Hollis was fourth in the 400 in 49.73.
Ryan Norton took fourth in the discus with a throw of 142-4 (43.40 meters).
Reid Guirlando was fifth in the 800 in 1:57.74 and
Palmer Hearne cleared 6-0.75 (1.85 meters) to claim fifth in the high jump.
Jamarsha Huglon set a personal best in the 400 (59.41) while
Kolton Kelley had a personal best in the 800 (2:00.26).
