SAN ANTONIO – Jimmy DeLeon hit a grand slam to highlight a 5-run fourth inning as UIW rolled to a 14-4 win over ULM in eight innings, securing the series victory Saturday at Sullivan Field.
DeLeon's grand slam pushed UIW's lead to 7-2 in the fourth. He finished with two hits and six RBIs, a walk and a run scored to pace the Cardinals. Grant Randall and Jared Rhodes had three hits each in the bottom two spots in the lineup, with Randall adding an RBI. Wilson Ehrhardt chipped in two hits with three RBIs and three runs scored. Alec Carr and Cameron Crotte had two hits and an RBI each as UIW racked up 17 hits.
ULM answered the five-run inning with an RBI groundout by Dupont to score
Shawn Dalton Weatherbee in the top of the fifth to get back within four, 7-3. However, UIW answered again in the sixth inning on DeLeon's RBI groundout to go back up, 8-3. After Weatherbee responded for ULM with a solo home run in the seventh, Ehrhardt belted a 2-run home run in the bottom half of the inning to increase the lead to 10-4. UIW tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth to win by run-rule, 14-4.
The teams traded runs early, as Daniel Calabrese was hit by a pitch to reach base in the bottom of the first for UIW. On an attempted steal of second, ULM committed two throwing errors, first at second base and again at third base, to allow Calabrese to score for the 1-0 lead.

UIW reclaimed the lead in the third as Cameron Crotte doubled with two outs to bring in Rey Mendoza to put the Cardinals back up, 2-1.

Starting pitcher Isaiah Zavala (2-0) earned the win for UIW, allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts in five innings. EJ Garcia threw the final three innings, allowing one run and two hits with one walk and five strikeouts to earn the save.
Cole Cressend suffered the loss for ULM, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits with three walks and one strikeout in three innings.
ULM and UIW conclude the series at 1 p.m. Sunday at Sullivan Field.
