Late-Inning Rally Falls Short; ULM Drops Series Opener at Texas State, 3-2

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Jessica Mullins recorded eight strikeouts en route to her 12th complete game of the season and Karmyn Bass went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs as Texas State outlasted ULM, 3-2, in the Sun Belt Conference series opener on Friday, April 21.

ULM starting pitcher Adrianna Chavarria was equally sharp in the early going, sitting down six of the first seven Bobcat batters she faced, with the only base runner coming on a two-out walk in the bottom of the second.

Texas State (27-19-1, 7-7-1 Sun Belt) took a 1-0 lead as Bass hammered an 0-2 offering from Chavarria over the left-field wall to lead off the bottom of the third.

Mullins retired the first nine batters she faced before Alexis Chavez bounced a single over third baseman's head into left field to lead off the top of the fourth inning.

Sara Vanderford opened the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off single to left field. Anna Jones reached on a fielding error by the center fielder and took second while Vanderford advanced to third base. Katarina Zarate followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Vanderford for a 2-0 advantage. With two outs, Bass picked up her second RBI of the game with a single to left-center field to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead as Jones scored from second base.

Mullins, who had scattered two hits over the first five innings, ran into trouble in the top of the sixth. Korie Kreps drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the frame and advanced to second base on a groundout. Andie Edwards drove the first pitch of her at-bat into center field that scored pinch-runner Taylor Broddick from second as the Warhawks pulled to within 3-1. With two outs, Campbell Selman delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring Edwards from second base as ULM (21-26, 4-12) cut its deficit to 3-2.

Mullins, who improved to 15-8, closed out the game by sitting the Warhawks down in order in the top of the seventh, including a pair of swinging strikeouts against pinch hitters. She allowed two runs on four hits with only one walk.

Chavarria (6-7) went four innings and allowed three runs, only one earned, on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Kassidy Giddens pitched two scoreless innings in relief, surrendering two hits and hitting one batter.

Texas State outhit ULM, 5-4, while ending a five-game losing streak.

With inclement weather expected in San Marcos on Sunday, ULM and Texas State will conclude the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday, with games at 2 and 4 p.m.
