JACKSON, Miss. – The ULM volleyball team dropped a five-set match at Jackson State Tuesday afternoon, 3-2 (18-25, 15-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-11).
The Warhawks (1-7 overall) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set. The Tigers (1-3 overall) were behind by only three when ULM went on a 7-2 scoring run. Jackson State used a 6-1 run to come within three once more, but three straight unanswered points by the Warhawks gave them back a firm lead. A kill by
Taylor Thomas and an attack error secured the set win for ULM.
In set two, with the score tied at six, the Warhawks went on an 8-3 scoring run to give them the advantage. They never looked back as they dominated set two with a 25-15 score.
With ULM up 5-3, the Tigers finally had enough and scored seven unanswered points to give them the lead. The Warhawks scored four unanswered to try and comeback late, but a kill by Kymorah Carter gave Jackson State its first set win of the afternoon.
In the fourth set, the Warhawks scored six straight to go up 6-3, but the Tigers scored eight of their own to reclaim the lead. For every point ULM scored, Jackson State scored two of their own as they tied the match at two.
In the winner-take-all fifth set, the Tigers scored eight out of the first nine points to build a large 8-1 lead. The Warhawks tried to save the match with a 6-0 scoring run, but Jackson State scored three out of the last four points to win the match 3-2.
Brynn Botkin led the team in kills with 15. Thomas put up 13 kills on her 21st birthday and had 10 digs.
Bailey Roberson once again was the team-leader in assists with 23, and
Cameron Rogers had a team-leading 17 digs.
The Warhawks head down south to the Big Easy in New Orleans where they will compete in the New Orleans Invitational. They play Southern at 7 p.m. Friday and New Orleans at 12 p.m. Saturday.
