MONROE, La – The ULM volleyball team suffered a five-set loss 3-2 (25-19, 28-30, 24-26, 25-16, 15-13) on Saturday.
The Thundering Herd (11-10 overall, 2-6 Sun Belt) raced out to a 5-2 lead in set one. Another 8-1 run by the Herd put the lead at 15-7. The Warhawks (4-16 overall, 0-8 Sun Belt) scored five in a row to come within three. With the score at 21-18, a 4-1 run by Marshall gave it the set.
The Warhawks started set two with a 5-3 run. The Herd scored five out of the next six points to take the lead. Marshall then put together a 9-2 run to take firm control of the set and later held set point at 24-19.
With three kills, ULM scored five in a row to tie the set and stay alive. The two teams battled back and forth to continue the set. With the score at 28-28, a kill and a service ace by
Ariana Brown ended the set, tying the match at 1-1.
With a 14-11 Marshall lead in the third set, the Warhawks produced a 7-2 run to take the lead back. A 6-2 run by the Herd forced another 24-24 tie. ULM wasted no time with two straight points to win the set.
Trailing 5-4 in set four, Marshall scored seven of the next eight points to lead 11-6. It kept control for the rest of the way and forced a winner-take-all all-fifth set.
Marshall took a demanding 6-2 lead to start in the final set. With the score at 10-6, ULM scored four straight points to tie the set. A 4-1 run by the Herd put it at set point, and a final kill secured the weekend sweep.
Ryley Boyne had a career-best 24 kills, while
Kali Walker led the team in digs with 18.
Madeline Villarreal produced a season-high eight total blocks.
Morgan Howard had an eye-opening 59 assists, both season and career-highs and is one shy of 1,000 career assists.
