ULM Drops Final Road Match of Regular Season 3-1 at South Alabama

The Jags scored twice in the final five minutes and pulled away in the closing moments.

MOBILE, Ala. -- The ULM soccer team (8-8-2, 2-5-2 Sun Belt Conference) dropped its final road match of the regular season to South Alabama (10-5-2, 5-2-2) as the Jags scored twice in the final five minutes of the game on Sunday (Oct. 27) afternoon from The Cage in Mobile, Ala.

After a scoreless first half, the Warhawks struck first when Giulia Franco gained possession in the offensive third of the field and finished with the game's first goal in the 46th minute. South Alabama's Irene Campo scored the equalizer for the Jags just one minute later and erased ULM's lead. Campo again found the back of the net in the 86th minute to give the home team a lead, and Campo kicked in an assist to Monique Gray and the Jags took the win.

The Jags finished the match with one more shot (16) and shot on goal (11) than the Warhawks, while ULM had six corner kick opportunities compared to South Alabama's one. Ashley Washburn led the Warhawks with six shots and aimed three shots on goal. Jennifer Handy made a season-high eight saves in goal.

Handy stopped the first scoring opportunity of the game for South Alabama in the 21st minute with her first save of the day. Washburn fired ULM's first shot on goal in the 30th minute with her shot saved by South Alabama's Allison Luckhardt. Jensyn Lins and Washburn added two additional shots on goal for ULM before the end of a scoreless first period.

Franco opened the scoring within the first minute of the start of the second half. South Alabama countered ULM's momentum and evened the count when Campo scored a goal with an assist by Gray. Mara Grutkamp recorded a shot on goal in the 61st minute and Franco added another in the 75th minute. Campo found the back of the net once again in the 86th minute to give the Jags their first lead of the afternoon. Gray added an insurance goal on a deep ball from Campo in the 88th minute.

The ULM soccer team returns to Brown Stadium for the final game of the regular season on Thursday (Oct. 31) versus Southern Miss at 6 p.m. The Warhawks trail the Golden Eagles by three points in the conference standings for eighth place, with the top eight teams qualifying for the SBC Championship.
