Volleyball Drops Opening Match at Troy

Ariana Brown and Ryley Boyne both notched double-digit kills in the opener.

TROY, Ala. -- The ULM indoor volleyball team (4-19, 0-11 Sun Belt Conference) fell to Troy (9-12, 4-7) in three sets on Thursday (Oct. 31) night at Trojan Arena in Troy, Ala.

Warhawk attackers Arianna Brown and Ryley Boyne both tallied double-digit kills with Brown leading the way at 13 and Boyne adding 10. Morgan Howard passed 29 assists and Cameron Rogers snagged a match-high 10 digs. Brown recorded two service aces while Madeline Villarreal and Sydney Garrison each had one. Lydia Mesusan led the Warhawks at the net with five blocks.

For Troy, Tori Hester swung for a match-high 19 kills and Janelle Stuempfig dished out 38 assists. Jaci Mesa had a team-high nine digs and Amiah Butler and Ella Broadhead both totaled four blocks.

Set One - Troy 25, ULM 23
With ULM trailing 6-4, Howard set up Mesusan for a kill that began a 3-0 run for the Warhawks that increased ULM's lead to 7-6. Troy answered with a 3-0 run of its own and reclaimed a 9-7 cushion. Brown blasted her third kill of the opening set to tie the count, 9-9. The Trojans pushed their lead to the largest of the set at 17-12. The Warhawks cut the Trojan lead with a 4-1 run that included a double block by Howard and Mesusan and a kill by Brown. Villarreal placed a service ace that split two Troy defenders, and the Warhawks trailed by one point at 21-20. ULM seized control of the lead after three consecutive kills by Boyne and led 23-22. The Trojans roared back and claimed the final three points to win set one, 25-23.

Set Two - Troy 25, ULM 21
Block assists by Mesusan and Howard and a kill by Villarreal decreased Troy's early lead to 9-8. Consecutive service aces by Brown evened the count at 12-12 midway through the set. After Troy reclaimed the lead, Mesusan and Taly Cloyd teamed up for a combo block and Troy committed an attack error that resulted in another tied score at 15-15. The Trojans reached 20 points after a kill by Kalina Calvillo and led 20-17. After an attack error by the Trojans, Troy ripped off three-straight points and held a 23-18 lead late in the set. Kills by Howard and Villarreal trimmed ULM's deficit to three at 23-20. Troy won two of the final three decisions to take the middle set.

Set Three - Troy 25, ULM 23
Trailing early 4-2, ULM scored three unanswered points to reclaim the lead, 5-4, which was concluded by a Garrison service ace. With the score even at 10-10, ULM jumped in front by three points following two ULM block assists and a Mesusan kill assisted by Rogers. Villarreal added a kill to help the Warhawks maintain a three-point edge at 15-12 and increased the Warhawks' lead to 17-13. Troy stormed back and grabbed an 18-17 lead before ULM's Brown swung for a kill to tie the set. After both teams exchanged the next two points, Troy won consecutive points and held a 21-19 lead. ULM cut the margin to one point three times down the stretch after a kills by Hannah Redrow, Howard and Mesusan. Hester closed the match with her 19th kill of the night to give Troy the sweep.

The Warhawks will finish the series at Troy tomorrow (Nov. 1) in Trojan Arena at 6 p.m.
