TOLEDO, Ohio -- Jakayla Johnson and
Daisha Bradford both notched double-doubles while
Sania Wells led ULM with 13 points, but the ULM women's basketball team (15-9, 7-5 Sun Belt) fell to Toledo (18-4, 10-1 MAC) on Saturday (Feb. 10) afternoon at Savage Arena.
Johnson racked up her first double-double in a ULM uniform after totaling 12 points and 10 boards. Bradford's double-double was her second in as many games and fourth of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Johnson and Wells both knocked down a trio of 3-point baskets and made 6-of-7 three-pointers for the Warhawks. The duo both added four assists each to their stat lines.
Brianna Harris and Katlyn Manel both finished with eight points.
Toledo took control of the lead after going on a 15-0 scoring run that spanned the third and fourth quarters. The Rockets capitalized on 23 points from turnovers in the game and shot 41.4% from the field. ULM shot 33.3% for the game and went 7-for-23 from beyond the arc. ULM outrebounded the Toledo 42-38 and grabbed four more offensive rebounds than the Rockets.
Wells gave ULM its first lead of the day with a 3-pointer at the top of the key to put the Warhawks in front, 5-3. The home team responded with a 11-2 run and forced a ULM timeout with 2:52 left in the opening quarter. Manuel cut through the lane and made a layup to make the score 16-11 Toledo at the end of the first.
After both teams were held scoreless in the first three minutes of the second quarter, the Rockets made a jumper to go back up by seven points with 6:46 in the half. Wells made her second 3-pointer of the half and trimmed Toledo's lead to two points. Johnson went coast-to-coast on a defensive rebound and evened the count at 18-18 inside five minutes remaining. Following a Toledo bucket, Johnson drilled a longball and ULM held a 21-20 lead with 3:35 left in the half. The Rockets reclaimed their lead and led 32-28 heading into the locker room.
A Wells 3-pointer and two Harris layups gave ULM a 37-34 lead at the 7:44 mark in the third. The Rockets responded and recaptured a one-point lead before the third quarter media timeout. After Bradford sank a pair of free throws, Toledo's offense produced 15 unanswered points, a run that carried over into the fourth quarter. The Warhawks could not close the gap to less than 11 points in the final quarter, and Toledo won its sixth-straight game.
The ULM women's basketball team will resume SBC play on Thursday (Feb. 15) at South Alabama. The Warhawks and Jaguars will play at 5 p.m. from Mobile on Thursday evening.
