Warhawks Rally in Second Half to Defeat Southern Miss, 57-52

ULM scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Golden Eagles at home.

MONROE, La. -- The ULM women's basketball team (17-10, 9-6 Sun Belt) erased a 12-point deficit in the third quarter and stormed back to sweep the regular season series over Southern Miss (15-11, 8-7) with a 57-52 win on Thursday (Feb. 22) night inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

The Warhawks shot 58.3% in the final quarter and utilized a 13-0 scoring run to control the lead in the final minutes. ULM dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring its opposition 22-10 in the last period.

Jakayla Johnson scored a game-high 16 points and poured in seven during the fourth quarter. She added a six boards, four assists and one steal. Brianna Harris finished in double figures with 11 points and led ULM with three steals. Lauren Gross sank a trio of 3-pointers versus her former team and chased down a pair of steals. Katlyn Manuel registered eight points and three rebounds while Sania Wells added seven points. Daisha Bradford grabbed six rebounds and tallied six points.

The Golden Eagles took an early 11-3 lead and forced a ULM timeout just over the midway mark of the first quarter. Bradford ended USM's scoring run with a layup assisted by Harris with 4:56 on the clock. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 11 points in the first period. ULM scored the final five points of the quarter after a Manuel layup and a Johnson 3-pointer. USM's bumped its lead to nine points with 5:54 in the first half. A Wells steal led to a Johnson layup to make the score 25-18 with four minutes remaining. Southern Miss led by 11 with under two minutes to go. Johnson knocked in the final bucket of the first half off a pass from Gross to trim Southern Miss' lead to single digits at the end of the first half.

The Golden Eagles drained their first 3-point attempt of the third quarter and led 32-20 early in the third. Gross answered when Bradford found her wide open on a fastbreak to bring ULM within nine. Bradford and Johnson threw in jumpers to cut USM's lead to five with less than seven minutes in the third. ULM narrowed the Golden Eagles' lead to two points after a Wells bucket and a Gross' third triple of the night with 5:45 in the third. Southern Miss went back ahead by 10 points following an 8-0 scoring run and led 42-32 with less than a minute to go. Harris delivered a much-needed three-pointer to keep the Warhawks within seven points at the end of the third.

The Warhawks hit their first two attempts in the fourth quarter after Harris made a pair of layups. Southern Miss pushed the lead back to seven with two-straight baskets. ULM fought back with 13 unanswered points and surged ahead, 52-46. Wells hit a triple to pull ULM within one point at the 6:59 mark and put her team ahead with a jumper at 5:08 left in the game. Manuel finished a layup and Johnson buried another triple for good measure and ULM led by six with less than three minutes to go. Southern Miss managed to trim ULM's lead to three points with under 30 seconds in the game. Bradford sank two free throws and sealed the comeback win for the Warhawks.

The ULM women's basketball team will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday (Feb. 24) versus Marshall at noon in the final game of the season in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
