Warhawks Blast Past Alabama A&M, 11-1

MONROE, La. – ULM scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and limited Alabama A&M to just two hits for the game, as the Warhawks opened the weekend series with an 11-1 win in seven innings on Friday night at Lou St. Amant Field.
 
Michelle Artzberger hit a pair of doubles while adding four RBIs with two runs scored to lead ULM (9-5 overall). Easton Winfield had two hits, including his fourth home run of the year, with two RBIs and three runs scored. Shawn Dalton Weatherbee also clubbed two doubles and Jake Haggard picked up two hits with an RBI. Bryce Blaser homered and finished with three RBIs in his first game since Feb. 25.
 
Jared Tribett hit a double for Alabama A&M and Chevalier Dorris added a pinch-hit single for the only two hits for the Bulldogs (2-11 overall).
 
Daniel Gonzalez (1-0) earned his first collegiate win for ULM, throwing four innings in the start, allowing one run on one hit with six strikeouts and no walks. Chipper Menard followed with two perfect innings, posting five strikeouts. Dalton Burrell fired a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and one walk to wrap up the win.
 
Anthony Mateo (0-3) took the loss for Alabama A&M, throwing five innings, allowing nine runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
 
Winfield led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk and stole second base. He moved to third on Colby Lunsford's fly out to right field. Artzberger hit an RBI double to plate Winfield, and Haggard followed with an RBI single to bring home Artzberger for the 2-0 lead. Blaser hit a 2-run home run to right field on the first pitch he saw in his return to go ahead 4-0. Weatherbee followed with a double and scored on Matt Abshire's RBI single to go up 5-0.
 
Alabama A&M scored its only run in the second as Tribett doubled to open the inning on a ball that was lost in the lights. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Zak Rice's RBI groundout to close the gap to 5-1.
 
ULM responded with a run in the bottom of the second as Artzberger's RBI groundout plated Winfield for the 6-1 advantage.
 
In the fourth inning, Artzberger added another RBI on a groundout, this time bringing in Lunsford, for the 7-1 lead.
 
ULM put the run rule in play in the sixth inning. Winfield belted a 2-run home run to right, Artzberger hit his second RBI double of the night and Blaser's sacrifice fly brought in Artzberger for the final run of the night, 11-1.
 
ULM and Alabama A&M continue the series at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lou St. Amant Field.
