MONROE, La. – ULM exploded for 14 runs on the strength of five home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, rolling to another run-rule win over Alabama A&M, 18-1 in seven innings, Saturday afternoon to claim the series at Lou St. Amant Field.
Easton Winfield had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored, hitting two home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. He is the first Warhawk to hit multiple home runs in an inning since Michael Harvey hit two homers in one inning vs. McNeese in 1996.
Eight other Warhawks had one hit.
Marcus Aranda hit a grand slam for his first career home run,
Ian Montz belted a 3-run blast and
Cardell Thibodeaux added a solo shot, all in the 14-run fifth inning.
Alabama A&M (2-12 overall) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Tristan Curless hit an RBI single to bring home Alex Diaz for the 1-0 lead.
ULM (10-5) answered in the bottom half of the inning as Winfield walked on four pitches, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error on the steal and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1.
The Warhawks were unable to take the lead until the bottom of the fourth inning, as
Jack Clark hit a 2-RBI double down the right-field line to score
Jake Haggard and
Shawn Dalton Weatherbee for the 3-1 lead. Clark moved to third on Aranda's ground ball and scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to three, 4-1.
ULM took any doubt out of the game with the 14-run inning, marking the second-most runs in one inning in program history behind a 19-run outburst against Southeastern in 2020. The Warhawks hit for the home run cycle in the inning, hitting a solo, 2-run and 3-run homers along with a grand slam. Winfield homered to lead off the inning.
Bryce Blaser added an RBI double to bring home
Michelle Artzberger. Haggard scored on a wild pitch before the bases were loaded and Aranda hit a grand slam over the right-center field wall to take the lead to 10, 11-1. After
Hasani Johnson walked, Winfield hit his second homer of the inning, a no-doubt shot to right to go up 13-1. Haggard picked up an RBI single to score Lunsford. Montz then connected for a 3-run homer, the first of his career, to push the lead to 17-1. Thibodeaux wrapped up the big inning with a solo homer to lead 18-1.
Parker Seay (2-1) came out of the bullpen to earn his second win of the season for ULM, throwing two shutout innings with four strikeouts and one walk.
Beau Blanchard threw three innings in the start, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Trey Lindsay and
Carson Orton each threw perfect innings with one strikeout.
Jackson Hall (0-4) took the loss for Alabama A&M, throwing 3 1/3 innings in the start, allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.
The series concludes at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lou St. Amant Field.
