MONROE, La. -- Kassidy Giddens,
Bristin Bordeau and
Gianni Hulett threw a combined five scoreless innings for the ULM softball team, but the No. 19 Ragin' Cajuns recorded a 1-0 win and claimed the series on Saturday (April 27) afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex in Monroe.
Ragin' Cajuns pitcher Sam Landry tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout and struck out two batters while only surrendering one walk. Landry is 20-7 on the season and led her team to the series victory and the Sun Belt regular season title.
For the Warhawks,
Maddie Nichols started in the circle and pitched two innings while giving up one run on three hits.
Kassidy Giddens threw 2.2 scoreless innings and gave up just one hit and one walk.
Bristin Bordeau completed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief work while
Gianni Hulett recorded two outs.
ULM turned a double play in the first inning and cut down a Cajun at the plate on a 4-3-2 double play to end the inning.
Meagan Brown walked for ULM in the bottom of the first with two outs for the Warhawks' only runner of the inning. Laney Credeur doubled home Dayzja Williams in the top of the second. ULM shortstop
Elle Carter threw out Credeur attempting to score another run for the Cajuns, and Nichols stranded a runner in scoring position with a groundout to end the top half of the second. Landry kept her team in front by pitching two consecutive 1-2-3 innings and ULM trailed 1-0 after three.
With one out in the fourth, Brown singled to right center, but was called out later in the inning for leaving first base early. Landry forced a flyout to end the fourth. Giddens gave way to Bordeau with two outs in the fifth, as ULM found the third out after tagging out Davis in between third and home.
Andie Edwards was the third Warhawk to reach base in the game from a Cajun throwing error with two outs, but Landry continued to cool down ULM's bats. After a scoreless sixth inning, the leadoff batter singled for the Cajuns in the top of the seventh. Hulett entered the game with one out and forced two groundouts to keep it a 1-0 game. Landry wrapped up the complete game shutout by pitching a 1-2-3 inning to give the Cajuns a 1-0 win in game two.
The Warhawks will celebrate Senior Day tomorrow (April 28) as ULM plays its final home game of the 2024 season at noon versus the Ragin' Cajuns.
