ULM Softball Celebrates Senior Day

Eight seniors were recognized before Sunday's final home game.

MONROE, La. -- The ULM softball team wrapped up its home schedule on Sunday (April 28) and finished the three-game series versus the No. 19 Ragin' Cajuns by falling 5-2 at the ULM Softball Complex.

Before the game, the Warhawks recognized eight seniors including Lourdes Bacon, Madison Blount, Taylor Broddick, Andie Edwards, Kassidy Giddens, Kelsey Giddens, Gianni Hulett and Kendall Morton for their contributions to the ULM softball program.

In the game, the Warhawks were held to two hits while the Cajuns racked up 11. The winning pitcher for the Ragin' Cajuns was Chloe Riassetto, who improved to 13-3 on the season. Riassetto tossed four innings and allowed just one run for the win. Sam Landry continued to collect outs and threw three scoreless innings. At the plate, Maddie Hayden, Brooke Ellestad, Victoria Valdez and Cecillia Vasquez all tallied a pair of hits for the visitors. Meagan Brown and Maryssa Zenzen were the only Warhawks to tally hits.

The Ragin' Cajuns' third baseman Brooke Ellestad drove in Maddie Hayden on a two-out single in the first. Lourdes Bacon and Meagan Brown both walked in the bottom of the first, but the Cajuns turned a double play to end the inning. Cecilia Vasquez added another run to the Cajuns' total in the second on an RBI base hit to left center that scored Dayzja Williams. After a 1-2-3 bottom of the second inning, the visitors scored for the third consecutive inning on an RBI groundout by Laney Credeur that allowed Ellestad to cross home plate. Riassetto pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the third and the Cajuns were in front 3-0 after three.

Kassidy Giddens took over in the circle in the fourth inning and pitched ULM's first scoreless frame, stranding two Cajuns. Brooklin Lippert and Meagan Brown started the bottom half of the inning with walks. Zenzen slipped a bunt past the pitcher to load the bases. Senior Andie Edwards drove in a run on a sacrifice fly that scored Lippert. Landry kept the Warhawks to one run and finished the inning off with a strikeout and a groundout. The Cajuns pushed the lead back to three in the fifth after an RBI knock by Hayden. The Warhawks were held scoreless in the bottom of the fifth.

Senior Gianni Hulett sent the Cajuns down in order in the top of the sixth. With one out, Brown singled to center field, but Landry recorded an inning-ending double play and the Cajuns maintained a three-run cushion. The visitors added an insurance run in the seventh. Senior Kendall Morton drew a pinch-hit walk and Jacelyn Buck followed with another walk to put the first two runners on base for ULM. Broddick produced an RBI groundout that scored Carys Platt to bring ULM within three runs. Riassetto finished the game by recording the final out to give the Cajuns the series sweep on a 5-2 game three win.

The Warhawks will complete the regular season with a series at Georgia State starting on Thursday (May 2) at noon in Atlanta.
