Soccer Preview: Warhawks Looking to Continue Unbeaten Streak Versus Grambling State

The ULM soccer team will be taking on undefeated Grambling State in Monroe on Thursday night.

KICKOFF –

The ULM soccer team will be returning to Brown Stadium to take on neighborhood foes Grambling State on Thursday in Monroe. The Warhawks are looking to continue their winning streak, as they beat the Southern Jaguars 2-0 in Baton Rouge on Sunday morning.

SERIES HISTORY –

ULM and Grambling State will meet on the pitch for the sixth straight year. Most recently, the Warhawks blanked the Tigers 1-0 last season on Sept. 14 in Grambling. The first meeting was a 2-1 Tiger win in Grambling on Sept. 2, 2007. Over the last 11 meetings, the combined score has been 35-7, in favor of ULM.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT –

Grambling State is looking to continue their own winning streak when they hit the road for Monroe on Thursday night. The Tigers shut out LSU-Alexandria 7-0 to open the season on the road, then blanked in a 0-0 draw at Southeastern Louisiana. They then traveled to Nicholls where they shutout the Colonels 2-0 on Sunday. The Tigers are predicted to win the SWAC, claiming three All-SWAC First Team members. Grambling's Aria Whitney also claimed SWAC Preseason Midfielder of the Year.

THIRD-PLACE PICK –

The Warhawks started the preseason strong, being selected third in the Sun Belt preseason coaches poll, receiving 138 votes. This is the highest ULM Soccer has been ranked in the SBC preseason poll since joining the conference in 2006.

LAST TIME OUT –

BATON ROUGE, La. – The ULM women's soccer team (2-0) took the win over the Southern University Jaguars (0-2) 2-0 Sunday morning, continuing the Warhawks' unbeaten streak. The game, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., was moved up to 10:30 a.m. due to the blistering heat in Baton Rouge. At kickoff, the air temperature was 88 degrees, with the heat index at 101. By the end of the match, the air temperature increased to 94 degrees, putting the heat index at 111.

Kai Douglas logged her second goal of the season, having now scored in each of ULM's matches this season. Bernadett Stefan got in on the action in the second half, logging her first ULM goal. Goalkeeper Jennifer Handy worked to earn the win, posting one save in the match in all 90 minutes played. Handy has earned the start in goal for both of ULM's matches this season. 

The Warhawks outshot the Jaguars 12-3, 7-1 on goal. Vanessa Praher led ULM in shots with three, Giulia Franco and Mara Grutkamp closely behind with two shots each. Franco led the team with two shots on target.

LOOKING AHEAD –

The Warhawks will be staying in Monroe for two more matches vs. Nicholls and McNeese on Aug. 25 and 29, respectively. Nicholls and ULM will face off at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
