MONTGOMERY, Al. – ULM volleyball picked up its first win of the 2024 season with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-23) win over South Carolina State on Saturday.
The Warhawks came off of a 0-2 first day with losses to Alabama State and Nicholls State. The Bulldogs were also 0-2 losing to the same teams.
ULM started the first set hot with an 11-5 run. With a 12-8 lead, it produced a 6-1 scoring run to pull ahead by double the Bulldog's score at 18-9. The Warhawks controlled the rest of the way to a comfortable first-set win.
In set two, the Warhawks once again raced out to an early lead, this time leading 13-5. After five back-and-forth plays, ULM used a 5-1 scoring run to produce a 20-9 lead. Losing control of the set, SCSU had a 6-1 scoring run to pull within six, but two final kills by
Ryley Boyne and
Morgan Howard sealed it.
With their backs against the wall down 2-0, it was the Bulldogs who came out firing with a 7-4 lead. The Warhawks took back control leading 13-11, but a 4-1 scoring run from the opposition lost that control.
Both teams were in a deadlock through the set. The Bulldogs had a late 23-22 lead looking to put away the set. ULM had other ideas as three-straight points, including two kills from
Ariana Brown and
Kali Walker, ended the set and gave the Warhawks the sweep.
Brown was to leader in kills with 12, while Boyne and
Hannah Redrow also contributed 9 and 8 kills. Howard was by far the team leader in assists with 35.
Cameron Rogers had 19 digs, while Brown had 12.
The Warhawks continue their road trip next weekend, traveling west to Arlington, Texas for the UTA Classic. They take on instate McNeese State on Thursday, September 5 at 2:30 p.m.
