ULM Soccer Drops Match at Old Dominion, 1-0

The Warhawks couldn’t move past the Monarch defense, an own-goal sealing the deal in Norfolk.

NORFOLK, Va. – The ULM soccer team (7-4, 1-1 SBC) has taken its first Sun Belt loss of the season, falling to preseason favorites Old Dominion (6-3-1, 1-0-1 SBC). An own-goal in the 63rd minute solidified the win for the Monarchs, who remain unbeaten in conference play.

The first half was a slow start to the match, Old Dominion credited with four shots and goalkeeper Jennifer Handy capturing two saves. The Warhawks did not post a shot in the first 45 minutes, but remained strong defensively to maintain the tie, 0-0.

Momentum in the last minutes of the first half moved into the second half, with ULM tallying their first shots and working to maintain possession. But the Monarchs continued to pressure Handy, and in the 63rd minute, chaos in front of the goal led to an own-goal by Janne Van Brummelen, placing Old Dominion in the lead, 1-0.

Mara Grutkamp led the team yet again with two shots in the match, Beth Strutton and Bernadett Stefan each tallying a shot. Old Dominion led 11-4 in shots, 3-1 in shots on goal. The teams were tied in corner kicks 2-2 and Handy led in saves with three on the match.

The Warhawks return home for a weekend match, taking on in-state foe Ragin' Cajuns in Monroe on Sunday. Kickoff for ULM's home conference opener will be at 5 p.m. Sunday's match will also be the Paws on the Pitch match, encouraging Warhawk fans to bring their dogs to the match. Tickets will be $5 for general admission and $15 for those who bring their dogs, who will also receive a ULM dog toy while supplies last.
