Warhawks Take a Tie vs. Ragin’ Cajuns, 2-2

ULM Soccer claimed its first tie of the season on Sunday evening, in front of the second largest crowd in program history.

MONROE, La. – The ULM soccer team (7-4-1, 1-1-1 SBC) took a 2-2 tie with the Ragin' Cajuns (5-2-6, 0-1-2 SBC) on Sunday evening. Both teams went back in forth in possession, each having spurts of momentum ending in goals. Neither team could solidify a win in the end, so both earned a point. This is the first tie for the Warhawks this season, a difference from the 2023 season, where they picked up eight ties throughout the season.

The Ragin' Cajuns got started almost immediately, hitting the back of the net in the seventh minute for the 1-0 lead. After trading possession back and forth for twenty minutes, the Warhawks found the equalizer in Janne Van Brummelen, who got a free kick in the back of the net. This was Van Brummelen's second goal of the season and third of her career. Both teams continued to fight for the lead, but the Ragin' Cajuns took it in the 41st minute, solidifying the lead, 2-1 at the half.

The second half started just as gritty as the first, with both teams fighting toward the net. In the 65th minute, Jensyn Linswas able to knock the equalizer in the back of the net for the Warhawks, making it a 2-2 tie. This was Lins' second goal of the season and of her career. She was assisted by Mara Grutkamp, her third of the season and 21st of her career. The final 25 minutes was a fight to score the game-winner, but neither team was able to hit the back of the net.

The Warhawks claimed 54% possession throughout the match, leading the Ragin' Cajuns in shots, 11-9 and saves, 4-2. The Ragin' Cajuns had the lead in corner kicks, 7-4 and fouls, 13-10. Grutkamp led the team in another match with three shots, two being on target. Lins and Skylar Blaise each had two shots in the match. Jennifer Handy claimed four saves in the match with her first tie of her career.

With her 21st career assist, Grutkamp moves closer to beating the program record for career assists. She currently stands in second place, the leader being Karlea Fehr (2012-15) with 24. This was also a large crowd for the Warhawks, getting the second-highest attendance all-time with 412 fans. The last time 400+ fans were in attendance was versus Louisiana Tech, when 465 fans helped open the season on Aug. 22, 2015.

Next week, ULM soccer will continue their three-game homestand by taking on the James Madison Dukes on Friday, the Dukes' first trip to Brown Stadium. Kickoff in Monroe will be at 6 p.m.
