Warhawks Drop Road Trip Contest at Arkansas State, 71-43

Meloney Thames hit five triples to score in double figures for the second consecutive game.

JONESBORO, Ark. – The ULM women's basketball team (7-11, 3-4 Sun Belt) fell to Arkansas State (10-7, 6-1 Sun Belt) by a score of 71-43 in Jonesboro, the second of a four-game road trip, on Saturday (Jan. 18). 
 
Meloney Thames was responsible for all five of the team's three-point buckets, hitting all five in the fourth quarter. The Choctaw, Miss. native led the team with 17 points and two blocks. Sakyia White and Laila Walker both led the team with 10 rebounds apiece, White also posting eight points. 
 
Arkansas State opened the scoring with a triple, tallying an early five points to get the Warhawks in the deficit. Whitestarted ULM off with a jumper to get them going. completed the first quarter shooting 0-11 in the field, keeping them out of the conversation early on. A 7-0 scoring run for the Red Wolves paired with a several minute scoring drought for the Warhawks got Arkansas State the lead early on, 16-5.
 
Zyion Shannon got a quick score in to extend the lead to 14 for the Red Wolves. Another run for Arkansas State got the lead to 20, as ULM fought to break it down. AJ Leake dropped a bucket from the field to break another scoring drought, but the lead remained at the half for Arkansas State, 32-12.
 
Katlyn Manuel opened the scoring for ULM in the second half, looking to bounce back from a 20-point deficit. As the Warhawks worked to break the lead down, the Red Wolves worked to maintain the lead with the second triple of the day. After the three, Arkansas State shot 1-8 from the field to give ULM the chance to close the gap. After cutting down the lead, the Red Wolves went on an 8-0 run to close the third quarter, 52-26.
 
Thames started off the fourth dropped back-to-back triples, the first threes for ULM of the contest. The Red Wolves refused to back off, however, dropping a three of their own to maintain the lead. After a 9-0 run from Arkansas State, Thames dropped four more triples, tallying five in the fourth quarter. While the junior guard got hot, the Warhawks were unable to come back from an early Arkansas State lead, falling 43-71.
 
The Warhawks remain on the road for the third in a four-game road trip, taking on the South Alabama Jaguars. Tip-off in Mobile on Wednesday (Jan. 22) is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
