MONROE, La. – ULM volleyball kept it close for most of the way but couldn't get the job done in a 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 20-25, 25-21) loss to Georgia State Thursday evening.
In the first set, the Warhawks (10-19, 1-14 Sun Belt) started fast with a 6-2 score aided by three
Jaliyah Cohnes kills. The Panthers (17-9, 8-7 Sun Belt), with a 6-2 run, tied the score at 9-9. With the away team up by two, ULM executed an 8-2 scoring run to take control of the set
With a 20-15 Warhawk lead, Georgia State took over for the rest of the way, only allowing a single point and scoring the final ten needed for a set one win.
ULM again stormed out to an early lead in set two with a 9-6 score at a timeout by Georgia State. The Panthers caught fire after the pause in play, scoring six in a row to take a three-point advantage of their own. The Warhawks scored three of five points to make the deficit two points, but two straight Panther points made it a four-point contest and forced the home team to call a timeout.
Georgia State scored six more in what was an eight-point unanswered streak, putting the Warhawks out of the set and going up 2-0 in the match.
After a 4-1 Panther start in the third, ULM got hot, scoring six of the next seven points to take the lead. With a narrow 13-12 advantage for the home team, the Warhawks scored four unanswered to establish control with a five-point lead.
With a 6-3 run, Georgia State surged closer as it decreased the gap to two. Three straight Warhawk points put them at 23 points, and a final kill by
Amelia Piekut ended the set, keeping ULM alive into the fourth.
In the fourth set, ULM started with the advantage, going up with a 7-3 lead. Four unanswered Panther strikes tied the set, but two errors gave the Warhawks the lead again. With a 6-2 run, the Atlanta squad took control with a 13-11 lead. ULM responded with a 6-2 run of its own to flip the lead back.
The Panthers took control from there, scoring eight of the next ten points to go up by four late. A final Georgia State kill ended things as the Warhawks fell in four.
Piekut ended the night with 17 put-aways and two blocks, while
Kennedy Plummer produced three aces.
Morgan Howard totaled 31 assists, two aces, and nine digs. Defensively,
Briana Raney collected 22 digs, and
Kenzie Behl had five blocks.
The Warhawks will end the 2025 regular season tomorrow at Noon on Senior Day.
