MONROE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team (4-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) utilized big scoring runs in the first and fourth quarters to secure their largest margin of victory this season Sunday evening as they defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-3, 0-0 SWAC) 79-50. The Warhawks are 4-0 for the first time since the 1984-85 Final Four team who were in attendance after being inducted into the ULM Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday morning as well as to support their teammate Lisa Ingram whose jersey was retired at halftime.
Â
The Warhawks saw eleven different players contribute at least four points to the team's score, led by
Jazmine Jackson who scored a career high 16 points shooting five for ten from the field, including a career best four for seven shooting effort from three-point range. As a team, ULM recorded their best output from beyond the arc as they connected on 12 of their 26 attempts for a 46.2 three-point percentage.Â
Â
ULM found themselves down 5-0 early on vs. the Lions before Jackson recorded her first three-point basket of the day. It would kick-start a 14-0 run for the home side that featured contributions from six different players offensively and several steals defensively.
Asjah Inniss acted as the offensive catalyst as she scored all eight of her points in the opening quarter to give the Warhawks a 12-point lead.
Â
The hot shooting continued into the second quarter as
Nailea Nicholas jumped off the bench to knock down her first two three-point attempts to push the lead to 18. Despite a strong start shooting the basketball as well, turnovers continued to plague the Lions and their ability to get back into the game. Two baskets from
Marcavia Shavers after a first three of the season from
Marissa Gasaway gave the Warhawks a 14-point lead at halftime.
Â
The third quarter proved to be contentious early as the Lions fought their way back into the game with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to single digits. Jackson would not be denied as eight of her game high total would come in the third quarter to help maintain the Warhawk lead.
Â
Offense and defense once again worked in perfect harmony in the fourth quarter as ULM would outscore UAPB 21-6 to end the game. A
Kamille Brown three-point play highlighted a 10-0 run to begin the quarter for the Warhawks and helped push the lead past 20. After a pair of free throws, the final nine points of the quarter were provided by senior
Katelyn Chomko, who connected on her last three attempts from beyond the arc to provide the exclamation point on a banner day for the Warhawks.
Â
ULM were able to score 31 points off of 26 UAPB turnovers. The Warhawks outscored the Lions 14-1 in second chance points behind 17 offensive rebounds. The bench also proved to be lethal once again as they outscored UAPB's bench 38-8.
Â
ULM will now prepare for their first game away from Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Thursday vs. Sam Houston State with tipoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Huntsville, Texas. The Warhawks will return home on Sunday to face Lamar starting at 2 p.m.
