LAFAYETTE, La. – ULM volleyball dropped its second match of the weekend 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-20) to the Ragin' Cajuns Friday afternoon.
Â
The Cajuns (14-10, 6-8 Sun Belt) started set one strongly, racing out to a 6-2 lead, helped by two aces. The Warhawks (10-18, 1-13 Sun Belt) couldn't prevent the set from getting out of hand as the home team produced an 11-2 scoring run to build a 12-point margin. In the set, the Ragin' Cajuns dominated the serve, tallying seven aces and never allowing ULM to score while serving.
Â
The Warhawks controlled the pace early in the second, holding a 5-4 lead powered by two kills from
Kennedy Plummer. The Cajuns took the lead back and possessed a narrow 9-8 lead before eight unanswered points put the set out of hand for ULM. The closest the Warhawks got the rest of the way was eight points, as the hole was too deep to get out of.
Â
Both teams were evenly matched to begin the third, with the Ragin' Cajuns holding a 7-6 lead. A 4-1 run by the hosts, helped by two Warhawk errors, set the lead to four points. Thanks in large part to
Amelia Piekut's three kills, ULM crawled back into it, only trailing 17-15 midway through.
Â
The Cajuns wasted no time in responding as a 5-1 scoring run established firm control over the set. The Warhawks worked three unanswered points to bring the deficit to three, but the home team sealed the deal, scoring three of the final four points at the end of the set.
Â
Piekut led the team with 11 ills while
Morgan Howard collected her 40
th ace of the season along with 20 assists.
Briana Raney led the way on the reception with 14 digs on the day.
Â
