Thames Scores 26 in Dropped Contest at Troy

The Warhawks hit eight three-pointers in the close contest, ultimately falling 71-84.

TROY, Ala. – The ULM women's basketball team (9-15, 5-8 Sun Belt) fell to Troy (16-10, 10-3 Sun Belt) on the road on Wednesday (Feb. 12) night. The Warhawks kept it close, with seven ties and eight lead changes making it a tight game.

Meloney Thames scored 26 on the night, just one point away from her career high. Jakayla Johnson also scored in double figures, posting 17, along with four assists and three steals. Sakyia White had double-digit boards for the third game, picking up 14 and five points.

Troy picked seven early turnovers in the slow start for both teams, as neither team reached double figures until the final minutes. A scoop and score by Johnson got ULM in the swing of things, keeping them in the contest. The Trojans went on to shoot 4-4 from the field to maintain the lead, the Trojans holding a five-point lead at the end of the quarter. Johnson opened the second quarter with a three, closing the gap for the Warhawks. Troy was able to stick with it, shooting in transition to remain ahead. A steal and score from White and another triple from Thames gave ULM the opportunity to grab the lead. A 7-0 run capped off by a three-pointer from Johnson gave the Warhawks a four-point lead, their largest of the night. But the Trojans would not back down, shooting 3-3 from the field to close the quarter, closing the deficit to one point, 40-39, in favor of the Warhawks.

The second half opened with the Trojans hitting a three-pointer for the lead. Johnson hit her second three to get the lead back to ULM, but Troy quickly tied it up in the competitive game. Another triple for Troy extended the lead, sending them on an 11-1 run. Thames' fourth shot beyond the arc and Nya Valentine's first three cut the lead down to two. Troy continued to work on the lead, as the Warhawks continued to fight to keep it close. Brikayla Gray got in on the action with a quick layup, as Thames hit her fifth triple to cut it down. Another 11-1 run for the Trojans put the ULM deficit in double digits, closing out the game 84-71.

The Warhawks will remain on the road to take on the Ragin' Cajuns in Lafayette. ULM will tip off against the Cajuns at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 15).
