MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (3-7) defeated the Jackson State Tigers (7-1) in a five-inning game on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 18), scoring nine runs on 10 hits. Two Warhawks picked up multi-RBI games, with
Meagan Brown being the lone Warhawk to log a multi-hit game.
A three-run first inning set up the Warhawks for a strong game early on. A double from
Cheyenne Jenkins picked up two RBIs with an error scoring the third. This was Jenkins' first career start, hit and RBI, as a true freshman. Jackson State began the attempt at a comeback in the third, with a single picking up a run for the Tigers.
The comeback was quickly thwarted, however, as a six-run fourth inning extended the lead further for ULM. A
Jacelyn Buck triple,
Hollie Thomas double and singles from
Carys Platt and
Meagan Brown picked up five RBIs to make the score 8-1.
Morgan Brown reached on a throwing error to score
Brooklin Lippert, making the parity eight runs. Three strikeouts for
Victoria Abrams closed out the Tigers, ending the game 9-1 in five innings.
Meagan Brown posted two hits on the night, leading the team, scoring two runs and an RBI. Freshmen Thomas and Jenkins both picked up two RBI off a double, leading the team.
Maddie Nichols was credited with the win, pitching four innings and allowing three hits and a run. Nichols also grabbed eight strikeouts, a team high for the season.
The softball team will be hosting the Warhawk Invitational this weekend, welcoming Stephen F. Austin, Houston Christian, Eastern Illinois and Southern University to Monroe. The first game will be on Thursday (Feb. 20) at 5 p.m., with ULM taking on Stephen F. Austin. The full tournament schedule can be found at ulmwarhawks.com.
