MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (10-7) continued their win streak on Friday (Feb. 28), defeating Tarleton State (12-6) and SEMO (5-6). The Warhawks have now won nine in a row, eight of those wins coming at home.
Game One: ULM 8, Tarleton State 4
A four-inning third is what jumpstarted ULM's momentum against the Texans, after two empty innings for both teams. A
Meagan Brown single scored the first, with
Morgan Brown following closely behind with a sacrifice fly, scoring another. With the 2-0 lead in hand,
Maryssa Zenzen doubled to center field, scoring two more to make the lead four.
Victoria Abrams continued to impress in the circle, holding the Texans to two hits in the first three innings, without allowing a run. It all changed, however, when a two-run homer for Tarleton State closed the gap to two runs in the fourth. The Warhawks scored three more off
Meagan Brown, as a double scored three to make it a 7-2 lead after four.
A
Brooklin Lippert single in the fifth scored the eighth run, beginning to tuck away the Texans. Both teams came up empty in the sixth, heading for the final inning of play. In the seventh, Tarleton State give it their all, hitting a single to score two and make the deficit four runs. The inning ended before the Texans could cut it any closer, the Warhawks claiming another win at home.
Meagan Brown was one of three Warhawks with a multi-hit game, tallying four RBIs off a single and a double. Lippert also logged two hits, collecting an RBI and a scored run. Zenzen rounded out the multi-hit players, with two hits and two RBIs from a double and a single. Abrams is credited with the win, pitching six innings and allowing four hits, four runs and four walks. She also struck out three Texans in the contest.
Game Two: ULM 4, SEMO 3
The second game for ULM started out similarly to the first, with a slow start. Neither team picked up a run until the fourth inning, where an
Elle Carter single scored one to give the Warhawks the edge. Three more runs were collected in the fifth for ULM, with another
Meagan Brown double to score two.
Reece Briggs then went on to hit her third homer of the season and ULM's first of the day, making it a 4-0 score at the end of the fifth.
A big sixth inning for the Redhawks kept it close, as a double and a single scored three to cut the deficit to one run. With SEMO holding the Warhawks off in the bottom of the sixth, things were looking dicey for the Warhawks. But a heroic effort from pitcher
Dakota Lake held on to the Warhawk victory, as she picked up three strikeouts to be credited with the save.
Lippert tacked on two more hits in a productive day, with a double and scoring a run as well.
Meagan Brown also posted two hits and two RBIs against the Redhawks with another double. Briggs logged the only homer of the day for ULM, her second this week after a home run at Northwestern State (Feb. 26). Pitcher
Maddie Nichols was credited with the win, pitching five innings and striking out three batters. Nichols allowed six hits, three runs and one walk in the contest.
The softball team will continue in the Best on the Bayou Tournament this weekend, welcoming Tarleton State, SEMO and Memphis to Monroe. The next game featuring the Warhawks will be on Saturday (Feb. 22) at 4 p.m., facing the Panthers. The full tournament schedule can be found at ulmwarhawks.com.
