MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (13-7) continued their win streak on Saturday (March 1), defeating Memphis (10-10) and SEMO (5-7). The Warhawks have now won 11 in a row, these two coming in unique fashion with a run-rule and a walk-off victory.
Game One: ULM 10, Memphis 2 (5 inn.)
The bats got hot for the Warhawks early, opening with a lead-off single from
Brooklin Lippert and one from
Meagan Brown in the first inning.
Morgan Brown's single marked the third in a row, scoring the first run of the game. A
Hollie Thomas single scored the second run and
Morgan Brown scored on a throw to catch Thomas stealing, ending the first inning with a 3-0 lead.
The Tigers would not go quietly, scoring a run to cut the deficit in the second. But a six-run third inning extended the lead even farther for ULM.
Kelsey Kovar singled to pick up two RBIs and
Meagan Brown singled again for the fifth Warhawk run.
Morgan Brown followed up with a double to score two and with the bases loaded,
Hollie Thomas snagged a walk to make it 9-1. A sacrifice fly for Memphis scored another run in the top of the fifth, but it was too late for the Tigers. Thomas was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning for the 10
th and winning run, closing it 10-2 in five innings.
Morgan Brown and
Hollie Thomas led the team with three hits apiece, both Warhawks also picking up three RBIs.
Maddie Nichols was credited with the win, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing two hits, a run and two walks.
Game Two: ULM 5, SEMO 4
The Redhawks held the lead until the seventh inning, with the Warhawks rallying to score in a walk-off victory. A first inning loaded-bases scenario gave SEMO the early edge, a walk scoring the first run of the game. The Warhawks were able to tie it up in the bottom of the first, with
Morgan Brown hitting a single to score one. The Redhawks got back on top in the third, as a triple scored two more for the 3-1 lead.
ULM was able to bounce back in the fourth, a home run by
Morgan Brown scoring two to tie it up for the second time. As the seventh inning approached, neither team was backing down, the defense refusing runs in the fifth and sixth. An RBI single in the top of the seventh gave SEMO the lead, leaving the Warhawks to make the comeback attempt in the final inning.
A single and two walks gave ULM the momentum it needed to close out the game, loading the bases. A
Jacelyn Buck walk scored the tying run, keeping the bases loaded and only one out.
Carys Platt hit the walk-off single, scoring the winner and continuing the win streak for ULM, 5-4.
Brooklin Lippert and
Morgan Brown both had the only multi-hit showings of the game for ULM, with Lippert tallying a stolen base and Brown hitting the lone homer and picking up three RBIs.
Dakota Lake was credited with the win, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing two hits, one run and no walks. Lake also struck out four batters to close out the win.
The softball team will continue in the Best on the Bayou Tournament this weekend, welcoming Tarleton State, SEMO and Memphis to Monroe. The next game featuring the Warhawks will be on Sunday (March 1) at 2 p.m., facing the Tigers to close out the tournament. The full tournament schedule can be found at ulmwarhawks.com.
