Warhawks Win in Walk-Off Thriller in Extra Innings

The ULM softball team held the lead until the seventh inning, when a grand slam tied it up for the Tigers.

MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (14-7) continued their win streak on Sunday afternoon (March 2), defeating Memphis (10-11) in nine innings The Warhawks have now won 12 in a row, the longest running streak for ULM softball since 1997, when the team won 22 in a row. This is also the first time the Warhawks have swept their hosted tournament since 2022, as ULM went undefeated between the Warhawk Invitational and the Best on the Bayou Tournament this year.

Memphis struck first, tallying its first run on a wild pitch in the top of the first. The Tigers held the lead by scoring a second run off a throwing error in the second. An Elle Carter single was the lead-off for the Warhawks in the bottom of the second, with Jacelyn Buck hitting the RBI single to chip at the lead. ULM quickly tied up the score, with Buck scoring off an error.

The Warhawks found the lead in the third, as Carter hit another single, a run scored on a Memphis throwing error. A wild pitch scored Carter, with Buck getting credit for the RBI on a walk to make it 4-2. The Tigers scored in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly, but ULM also found an opportunity, scoring from a sacrifice foul-out.

The fifth inning held things at a 5-3 lead in favor of ULM. The sixth brought a lead extension for the Warhawks, with a Hollie Thomas double scoring the sixth run and another single from Carter scoring the seventh. With a comfortable 7-3 Warhawk lead, the Tigers tied it up with a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning. Unable to score the winner, the game headed for extra innings, for the first time all season for ULM. While both teams had opportunities in the eighth, neither scored, taking the game to the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, a Carys Platt single scored Cheyenne Jenkins, snagging the walk-off win for the second-straight time in this fashion, 8-7.

Platt and Carter led the team with three hits apiece, Buck leading with two RBIs on the day. Thomas hit the lone double for ULM and Morgan Brown snagged a stolen base to lead the team as well. Victoria Abrams was credited with the win, pitching the two extra innings and allowing no hits, no runs and one walk. She also posted three strikeouts in those two innings.

The softball team will remain at home next, looking to maintain their undefeated reign at the ULM Softball Complex. ULM will host McNeese on Tuesday (March 4) at 6 p.m.
