MONROE – Strong performances from the bottom of the lineup and solid pitching secured the 13
th consecutive win for the ULM softball team in a 5-1 victory over McNeese State Tuesday night.
The Cowgirls (11-10) drew first blood with a two-out double through the left side to make it a 1-0 game in the top of the first. The Warhawks (15-7) couldn't respond in the bottom half and trailed going into the second.
Hollie Thomas threw out a runner stealing a base to keep the deficit at one.
Elle Carter produced the first ULM hit of the evening with two outs.
Reece Briggs initially hit a single with an error by the outfielder, scoring Carter. After the video review, Carter was shown to leave the bag early, which resulted in her being out and keeping the game scoreless.
With a runner on in the top of the third for McNeese State,
Morgan Brown turned a double play to end the threat. With
Carys Platt and
Jacelyn Buck on base, Meagan brown produced a two-RBI triple to the left field gap to give the Warhawks a 2-1 lead. The Cowgirls were held scoreless again with only one hit in the top fourth frame.
ULM started the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded with two singles hit and a walk. With one out,
Jacelyn Buck drilled a double to the right-center gap to clear the bases and give the Warhawks a four-run lead.
After a leadoff single in the top of the fifth, Dakota Taylor entered for
Maddie Nichols. Nichols ended the night with 4.0 innings pitched, allowing just one run. Lake produced a strikeout, and the ULM defense got two outs. The Warhawks fouled out twice in a three-up three-down bottom half.
McNeese State put a runner in scoring position with two outs in the top of the sixth, but Lake struck out the next batter, ending the scoring threat. ULM went down in order in the bottom of the sixth to end the inning.
After a strikeout to start the top of the seventh, Platt made a highlight-reel catch to produce the second out, and a groundout sealed the win and kept the winning-streak alive.
The Warhawks will travel to Baton Rouge tomorrow for a matchup with LSU at 6 p.m.
