Warhawks Drop Last-Minute Contest to Mountaineers, 71-73

Jakayla Johnson hit 28 points for the second time in a week, with the team making a combined 10 triples.

MONROE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team (9-13, 5-6 Sun Belt) fell in a close game with the App State Mountaineers (13-9, 9-3 Sun Belt), the loss coming in the final seconds on Wednesday night (Feb. 5). Jakayla Johnson tied her season-high of 28 points, an achievement reached just six days prior versus South Alabama. While the Warhawks knocked down 10 shots beyond the arc for the second time this season, the Mountaineers hit 14 to close it out.

Johnson shot 10-17, hitting four triples in her 28-point game, also tallying five rebounds, six assists and three steals on the night. Meloney Thames had another double-figure game, posting 19 points along with four assists, three steals and a rebound. Sakyia White battled to pick up nine boards, along with six points, three assists and three steals. Of the 10 triples, Johnson, Thames, Cianté Downs and Nya Valentine hit at least one.

The Warhawks opened the scoring with back-to-back threes from Thames, holding on to three-point machine App State, who hit six triples in the first quarter. With a steal and score from Downs and a 6-0 run, the Warhawks took back the lead for a majority of the quarter. There were five lead changes in the first quarter alone, with the Mountaineers coming out on top after the first 10 minutes. Triples were the name of the game in the second quarter as well, with Johnson opening the second quarter with a three to get ULM back in action. Downs also got a shot in beyond the arc, her second career three-pointer and second this season. App State went cold after a hot first quarter, going 0-6 from the field and going on a six-minute scoring drought. Another 6-0 Warhawk run got them on top at the half, 34-33.

App State opened the scoring in the second half, looking for a comeback. But the Warhawks would not go down silently, with another three-pointer from Johnson and a scoop and score from Thames, ULM went on a 10-0 run for their largest lead of the night. The Mountaineers continued to battle back, hitting two triples to keep it close. Johnson and White fought to keep the Warhawks ahead, with a major stop getting the momentum on ULM's side. Valentine got hot as well, hitting two triples to keep ULM ahead. App State hit their 14th and final three-pointer to tie the game, a layup sealing the victory for the Mountaineers, 71-73.

The Warhawks will hit the road to take on the South Alabama Jaguars, a rescheduled game due to winter weather. ULM will tip off in Mobile at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 8).
